Wagga’s Police Station

The Wagga Wagga Police Station was established by 25 November 1851 when a chief constable was appointed there. By 1863 the station was situated in the police administration in the Murray District and was staffed by one mounted sub-inspector, one mounted sergeant, one mounted senior constable, six mounted constables and one-foot constable.

The Wagga police station built in 1927 was located next to the Court House in Sturt Street although this became overcrowded with some staff using other premises for example in Morgan Street  and the Esplanade.

Today the Police Station is a multi-story building opened on 26 February 2009 and located on police land on the corner of Tarcutta and Johnston streets. Former police houses occupied by the police chiefs of the day and their families were previously located on that block.

Many years ago, this site on the corner of Tarcutta and Johnston Street was also the site of Wagga’s hospital prior to establishment on the current site in Edward Street in 1910.

Early Wagga Hospital built on the corner of Tarcutta and Johnston Sreets in the 1860’s. The new Wagga Police Station is now located on this site.
