Wagga’s new RSL Club 1958

In May 1955 the RSL Wagga Subbranch purchased a large old home, known as “Goonigul” on two acres bounded by Goonigul Avenue, Kincaid Street and Dobbs Street for £14,500.

Plans for the  Club building were drawn up in 1957 and the new clubrooms were opened by the President of the State Branch of the RSL, William (Bill) Yeo on 24th March 1958. Club President at the time was Stan Sadlier and secretary-manager was Wal Spokes. This photo was taken in 1958 and the “Goonigul” home is still clearly visible on the right.

You’ll find more details about the RSL Club and the RSL Wagga Sub Branch in the book, “A history of the Wagga Wagga Sub Branch of the Returned and Services League of Australia : 1918-1998” by Sherry Morris and Harold Fife.
