The Murrumbidgee Experimental Farm, later renamed the Wagga Experiment Farm was established with the urging of James Gormly MLA and others.
In October 1892 about 2,000 acres of the North Wagga Common were dedicated as its site. The farm was one of those used by William Farrer who released the first of his rust resistent wheats, the Federation in 1901.
The Wagga Agricultural College grew out of the Experiment Farm in 1949 and the Agricultural Research Institute followed in 1953.
This picture from the Mathew Collection at CSURA (RW3082) was taken about 1894 and shows John Coleman, superintendent of Wagga Experiment Farm, with workmen clearing land for the farm.
