Wagga’s hospital was first established in 1856 in a small cottage in Kincaid Street. It was later moved to the corner of Tarcutta and Johnston Streets (on the site of the present police Station) and finally to its present site in Edward Street in 1910.
Although it began locally the hospital gradually became more dependent on Government assistance especially after the formation of the Hospitals’ Commission of New South Wales in 1929.
In 1938 it became known as Wagga Wagga Base Hospital. This name was recently changed somewhat controversially to the Wagga Wagga Rural Referral Hospital and presently this new name is under review.
CSU Regional Archives are not sure exactly when this photograph was taken but it must be after the 1950s, because the multi-storey block, which was recently demolished, was opened in 1963. It also must be after 1967 since Rawson Private Hospital, which was in the bottom left hand corner, is gone. Best guess dates the photo from the late 1960s or early 1970s.
