Master Ladies Hairdresser’s Association

FROM THE WAGGA WAGGA & DISTRICTS HISTORICAL SOCIETY ARCHIVES: Master Ladies Hairdresser’s Association, Wagga Wagga.

Recently the Historical Society Archives received from Miss Ida Buckley a donation of original correspondence for the formation of a Local Branch of the Master Ladies Hairdresser’s Association (N.S.W.) with Headquarters at Wagga Wagga.
Included is a circular letter to all salon owners within a 60 mile radius of Wagga Wagga, dated 25th September, 1962, advising them of the advantages of the formation of a local branch and calling for expressions of interest. The branch was formed in 1962 with Miss Ida Buckley of the Du Barry Salon, Baylis St. Wagga Wagga, as President.
Original hand written copies of Annual Reports from 1962 to 1973 give an excellent account of the varied activities of the branch through prosperous and lean years.
The reports indicate the value and energy of the branch with exhibitions held featuring visiting professionals, keeping salon owners up to date with styling and public demonstrations – held at salons or at T.A.F.E.
Some of the names of hairdressers in that era which will no doubt be familiar to many members are as follows: Ida Buckley, Dot Osmond, Phyl Donohue, Valerie Brown, Stephen and Irene Lakner.
This is a unique collection of documents and the archives is privileged to accept them.
The Society archives are located at the Museum of the Riverina, Willans Hill site, and can be accessed by appointment.
If you wish to make an appointment please refer to the “CONTACT” page for contact details.
