25 Years Ago

  • Country music legend, Slim Dusty, performed at the Truck Drivers Memorial Dinner at Kyeamba Smith Hall.
  • Work on Wagga’s new civic centre is well advanced and is expected to be complete by December this year.
  • Five local refugee support groups involved in the Community Refugee Settlement Scheme (CRSS) were presented with appreciative badges from the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs.
  • Wagga High School student, Katie Robbins was awarded overall Riverina Champion for level five in the girl’s division in the Riverina Gymnastic Club Championships finishing with four first places on the bars, floor, beam, and vault.
  • Colleen Maloney, Stephanie Gray and Catherine Malone were among those attending a reunion of the Mount Erin Class of 1956 at the Charles Sturt Motor Inn.

  • Gordon and Lana Tse are celebrating the seventh anniversary of their Golden Season Family Restaurant on the corner of Blake and Forsyth Streets.
  • Angela Burgess received the Sister Alexis Horsley Award at the Trinity Senior High School’s presentation night for the best overall performance in the trial HSC examinations.
  • Tom Stacy, chairman of the Murrumbidgee Catchment Management Committee said that it would cost about $1 billion over the next 20 years to fix the most pressing problems in the Murrumbidgee catchment.

50 Years Ago

  • Winners of the Toby Lee, “Man and Woman of the Day” at the Wagga races on Saturday were Mr J R Blake and Mrs Enid Smith.
  • North Wagga captain-coach, Alan Hayes will undergo surgery on his little fingers in November but expects to be ready in February to start training for next season’s Farrer League competition.
  • Roy Griffiths and John Hepburn from South Wagga Rotary and Graham Buchanan from Wagga Rotaract are pictured in the Daily Advertiser working at a combined working bee on Saturday for Gumleigh Boys Home.
  • Mr Peter Dewey, orthopaedic surgeon, addressed a seminar for people associated with the handicapped at Kurrajong School.
  • Vice-president of South Wagga Lions Club, Ian Mortimer presented a cheque for $200 to the Wagga branch of Meals on Wheels.
  • The Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr Heinz Voigt planted a commemorative tree at the Botanic Gardens during a visit to Wagga.

  • Prizemoney at Wagga race meetings will increase next year by about 30% to $92,000 including $7000 for the Wagga Gold Cup and $3000 for the Town Plate.
  • Wagga Alderman, Aub Loch, was re-elected unopposed for his third term as chairman of the Southern Riverina County Council.

  • Mrs Jean Stokes won four gold and five bronze medals at the Australian Paraplegic Games in Adelaide.
  • Principal of Trinity Senior High School Sister Rosarie announced a lecture theatre and ancillary buildings will replace prefabricated classrooms in use since the school’s establishment in 1968.
  • Wagga City Council rejected an application for the construction of a four-storey block of 18 flats in Peter Street after consideration of objections from Peter Street residents.
  • More than 100 fishermen from the Riverina met at a rowdy meeting held at the Wagga RSL Club to formulate a 10-point plan to improve fishing conditions in Riverina streams.
  • Wagga was decisively beaten by Griffith in the Patterson Cup women’s inter-association basketball competition.
