25 Years Ago

  • Wagga City Council will plant at least 700 additional trees as an environmental trade-off for using six instead of four-cylinder cars in its 47-vehicle fleet.
  • A gathering of more than 60 Vietnam veterans for Long Tan Day and Vietnam Veterans Remembrance Day unveiled a special honour roll.
  • Kooringal High School students, Carla Hackett, Jodie McLeod, Daniel Connolly, and Christine Wallace won two sections of the Globe Centre Shakespeare competition in Sydney recently.
  • Ross Allen became the first male umpire to control a women’s bowls match in the Riverina District Women’s Bowling Association.
  • Weekend of Champions chairperson Kay Hull presented major sponsors Wagga Motors, proprietors Gordon and John Braid with the first ticket for the 1998 Weekends of Champion Gala Dinner.
  • Daily Advertiser staff members, Steve Beazley, Tara Searle, Jim Hutchinson, and Jennifer Veerhuis formed a team to compete in the Wagga Gun Club annual media challenge.
  • Charles Sturt University lecturer and administrator, Brian Cornish has retired after 15 years at the Wagga Campus.
  • Melissa Hubbard, Chemain Perceval, Alicen Knight, Kristie Brocks and Sheree Webb are pictured in the Daily Advertiser attending the North Wagga-Royal Australian Air Force Football Club Ball at the Riverina Australian Football Club.
  • Eric Blair was presented with a plaque by council in recognition of his outstanding involvement with the council’s Waste Management Advisory Group.
  • Ross Hedt is pictured in the Daily Advertiser inspecting some of the work on display at the St. Michael’s Art and Craft Fair.
  • Mayor John Harding indicated his intention to seek a second term as Mayor while former mayors, Kevin Wales and Peter Dale did not rule out standing again.
  • Councillors Mary Kidson, Kevin Wales and Dennis Blackett said they would accept nominations for deputy mayor while current deputy mayor, Kay Hull will not stand for a fourth term due to her commitment to stand for the National Party in the seat of Riverina.
  • Wagga central business district retailers may be asked to contribute through a special rate to a possible $400,000-a-year program to market and manage the city’s new-look main street.
  • More than 20,000 fresh daffodils are available across the region for Daffodil Day the Cancer Council fundraising and awareness event this week.

50 Years Ago

  • Wagga’s Mayor Dick Gorman said that he was “disappointed” that Wagga had not been included in the Federal Government “New Cities” program announced by Minister for Urban and Regional Development, Mr Tom Uren.
  • The taxi cab rank in Forsyth Street located close to the public toilets in the centre of the Street is to be relocated to Thompson Street for safety reasons.
  • President, Arthur Dixon announced that Wagga Leagues Club had a trading surplus of $161,149 in the last 12 months an increase of $47,013 on the previous 12 months.
  • Wagga grazier and stud master, Mr Colin Lamont is the new chairman of the Murrumbidgee Turf Club, defeating Mr Doch McLennan in a close ballot.
  • The Bengal Tavern advertised in the Daily Advertiser a wine and dine lunch for an all-inclusive $1.75.
  • About 50 competitors took part in the Riverina Cross Country Championships on the outskirts of Wagga, won by Brian Fegan.
  • Theo Andronicus owner of the Bidgee Milk Bar and Cafe, who came to Wagga from Greece in 1954 at the age of sixteen has completed extensive renovations.
  • Mr Jim Sibree, economist with the Department of Agriculture, Wagga said that the Federal Budget was great for farmers over 75 years of age who abstained from tobacco and whiskey and still retained their horse teams.
  • Store manager of Woolworths’ recently closed supermarket in Baylis Street said that the store would shortly be replaced by a Woolworths’ homemakers store.
  • Wagga High School students, Peter Orchiston, Nigel Mowser and Ray Elder won the combined Wagga High Schools A Division Debating competition.
  • Defending titleholder Eddie Charleton won the 1973 Australian Professional Snooker Championship final at the Wagga RSL Club.
  • Two students from the Riverina College of Advanced Education were injured, one fatally when they were struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Trail and Gurwood Streets.
  • Chief Electricity Engineer of the Southern Riverina County Council, Mr H J Wilson won a major award at a conference of the Electricity Supply Engineers’ Association of NSW with the presentation of a paper on underground reticulation in Wagga.
  • Fourteen-year-old Adele Casperson was crowned Miss Kooringal High School at a school dance attended by about 170 students as well as many staff and parents.
  • Mr Frank Suzor, Principal at Barham High School has been appointed as principal at Mount Austin High School from the start of the 1974 school year next February.
  • Fifteen teenagers met with the Mayor, Ald Gorman and Wagga Social Worker, Mrs Sue Vardon to discuss ways to organise a teenage meeting place in Wagga.
  • A record 22 entries have been received for the 1973 Wagga Drama Festival opening this week.
