- A crowd nearing 1000, the town’s population, gathered at a Civic Reception on Saturday night to thank Jack and Peter Veneris who have been serving the people of Lockhart for the past 50 years at the Bluebird café before handing over to new owners earlier this month.

- Wagga man Kerry “Pop” Power is the first person swim the Murrumbidgee River from Gundagai to Wagga which he completed to raise funds for the Riverina Radiotherapy Cancer Centre Appeal.

- Glen Towle, chairman of CBD (central business district) Wagga, said that Wagga ‘s CBD could become the number one retail precinct in regional Australia.

- Two Wagga detectives are searching for the cause of a suspicious Willan’s Hill fire which burnt out about 60 hectares, hospitalised two firefighters and threatened houses in Warrawong Street.

- Wagga couple, Sylvia and Les Sewell, celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

- Gissing’s Pharmacies in the Sturt Mall and Wagga Marketplace were the first pharmacies in south-western New South Wales to gain accreditation under the Pharmacy Guild’s Quality Care Program and were presented with a certificate of Accreditation by Member for Riverina Kay Hull.

- Prime Minister, John Howard announced that the Duke of Edinburgh will visit Wagga on the Tuesday March 21.

- New South Wales State President of the Parents and Citizens Association, Bev Baker was in Wagga to attend the Association’s Wagga District Council annual general meeting.

- Wagga’s Mick McTaggart has been confirmed as the new chief executive officer with NSW Country Rugby Union to be based at Concord Oval in Sydney.

- John Rosengren, former headmaster at Kooringal High School, best remembered for his commitment to young people and his love of music, has died after battling cancer.

- Masonic Lodges in Wagga and Junee are joining forces to clean the Olympic Way between their two centres.

- Insurance giant QBE has announced the relocation of its Wagga workers compensation operation to Wollongong with the loss of 13 jobs in Wagga.
- Some Wagga motorists are now paying more than 90 cents a litre for petrol with the Caltex service station at Lake Albert now charging 91 cents per litre for super and 88.9 cents per litre for unleaded fuel.
- Wagga firm, Byrnes Trailers Australia has signed a multi-million-dollar deal with Phoenix Technology to supply 500,000 tonnes of dry waste per year to a new processing plant in Newcastle.

- The Johnny Farnham Show is on this week at the Eric Weissel Oval with tickets available for $2 each at the Wagga Leagues Club, Spectrum, Lawrences Sports Store, Ravas and Quinlivans.

- A new community health centre was opened in Wagga with many officials attending photographed in the Daily Advertiser.

- Trinity School Captains Graeme Kelly and Patricia Lhuede are pictured with principal of the school Brother J E Hyde after their presentation ceremony.

- Wagga High School captains Tracey and John Smith (who share the same surname but are from different families) were congratulated by Deputy Mayor Ald Brian Allen after their presentation ceremony at the school.

- Leanda Graham was presented with her Queens Guide Badge by Mrs Marcia Fife, wife of the member for Wagga, Mr Wal Fife.

- A reunion of wartime Wagga V.A.D.’s was held at the home of Mrs Doreen Hutchinson in Grandview Avenue.

- Mr H A Fraser who worked with the Department of Agriculture for the past 47 years has retired and was farewelled by friends at the Wagga Commercial Club.

- Peter Dale at G J Fitzpatrick and Co in Gurwood Street is promoting the Newcastle Permanent Building Society which is currently paying 10% p.a. on savings accounts.

- Gateway bookshop in South Town Walk is advertising a range of specially selected books for pre-schoolers

- Constable John Graham of Wagga, a bagpipe playing member of the NSW Police Pipe band will be off to England and Scotland this year and will take part in the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

- Mates Stores are advertising duck season shotgun specials priced from $39.95.

- Joan Gardiner in Gurwood Street is advertising a swinging Autumn opening this week.

- Huthwaites are selling Dunlop Volley OC white tennis shoes for $3.50, navy Gym boots for $6.99 and Levi’s navy denim sneakers for $6.99 a pair.

- Wagga man, Darryl Elsley has been selected as a member of the National Mutual, “Top Twenty” team made up of field representatives who in the previous year are judged to have made the most outstanding contribution to the success of the National Mutual Group.
- A 24-year-old labourer was fined $200 and placed on a $200 two-year good behaviour bond when he appeared in Wagga Court on a charge of possessing Indian Hemp.
- Bookings are open for the Marionette Theatre of Australia which will be performing next week at the Civic Theatre.
