Wagga Saleyards in Travers Street

In 1891 Council purchased the saleyards established by A. T. Bolton in Travers Street. By the 1920’s Wagga Wagga was recognised as the largest stock selling area outside the metropolitan markets. Sales of sheep alone increased from 59,621 in 1915 to 554,066 in 1928.

Railway Museum – our July Meeting

There is a change of date and location for our July meeting which will now be held in the Wagga railway precinct on Friday 21st July. We will start at 10am at the Railway Barracks, 61 Railway Street (pictured above)

Railway Bridge over Murrumbidgee River 1881

Although the railway reached North Wagga in 1878, the bridge over the Murrumbidgee River was not completed until November 1880 with the first train crossing January 16, 1881.

ANZAC DAY Wagga 1952

This is Wagga’s Anzac Day Parade in Baylis Street in 1952. The large building in the centre was the Empire Hall which has been demolished. The next building to its left was the Exchange Hotel which minus its verandah became the John Macarthur Hotel and is now Cache.
