25 Years Ago

  • Wagga Community Consultative Committee chairman, Marie Thompson said that the committee was pushing for an extension of Wagga’s alcohol-free zone and a higher police profile in the central business district.
  • Pat Morgan from Gissing’s Pharmacy was announced as the Australian Pharmacy Assistant of the Year quest at a special function held at Melbourne’s Hilton Hotel.
  • Cr Joe Mason Cox, a city councillor since 1987 said that division amongst Wagga’s elected representatives had hampered the development of the city.
  • Janet French was inducted at the Sunrise Rotary change over as the first ever female Rotary Club President in Rotary District 9700.
  • RSL Cricket Club’s first ever first grade winning premiership team from 1974-75 held a reunion at the RSL Club.
  • More than 130 people from many nations attended a Refugee Week ecumenical prayer service hosted by Holy Trinity Church at Ashmont. A reflection homily was given by Monsignor Michael Burgess.
  • Anthony Paul was presented with his plaque as winner of the NSW Law Society Solicitors Community Service Award.
  • Cr Mason Cox is retiring as a dentist after a career spanning 38 years.
  • Cr Jim Eldridge announced that he will stand again for election to Wagga City Council joined by Maurice Salmon and Laurie Richardson.
  • Armed robberies occurred on the same day at Fosseys in Baylis Street and Jewel Food Stores in Peter Street.
  • Lecturers at Charles Sturt University’s Wagga campus are locked in an industrial dispute after negotiations for a wage rise broke down.
  • The “Buddy Holly” show is featured at the Old Wagga Inn as part of their “Christmas in July” event held in their Grand Ballroom.
  • Cannons Supermarkets are selling Remy Brandy 750ml for $16.49, Hanwood Port 750ml for $11.49 and Hahn Ice beer in cans or stubbies for $24.95 per case.

50 Years Ago

  • Managing Director of Bell’s Soft Drinks, Ian Bell, said they would soon be the largest single soft drink manufacturer in country NSW after transferring all their Canberra production plant to Wagga.
  • Bolivian yo-yo champion, Mario Villages demonstrated his yo-yoing ability at Edmondsons.
  • A Wagga City Council deputation meeting with Member for Wagga, Mr Wal Fife and Divisional Engineer for the Department of Main Roads, Chris Penney was told that present works on the Hampden bridge are the first major structural improvements in 30 years.
  • M Rava & Co are selling electric blankets with a three-year guarantee, single bed from $5.95 and double bed from $14.50.
  • G J Fitzpatrick in Gurwood Street are advertising in the Daily Advertiser one and two bedroom flats with rentals between $13 and $23 per week.
  • 450 guests and their hostesses attended the Wagga Spinsters Ball at the Kyeamba Smith Hall.
  • Miss Wagga, Helen Everitt on behalf of the Community Advancement fund presented a cheque for $200 to Mr Geoff Hull from the Interchurch Action Group as a contribution towards publication cost of a Directory of Community Services Booklet.
  • Mr A Trewin, a lecturer at Wagga Teachers College was elected president of the new Wagga branch of the Arts Council of Australia.
  • Barbara White was guest of honour at a party held at the Wagga Commercial Club to celebrate her twenty-first birthday.
  • Mr Charles James Spokes an old and highly respected citizen of Wagga who for the greater part of his life conducted a dairy and milk supply business has died at Wagga Base Hospital.
  • At their annual changeover dinner held at the Leagues Club Wagga Rotary President Cec Boardman handed over to incoming President, Maurice Hale.
  • Well known Riverina sports enthusiast Bernie Weir is retiring after 44 years’ service with the Rural Bank.
  • Thomas Bros in Baylis Street are advertising the mighty Hillman Hunter, outright winner of the London-Sydney Marathon in the Daily Advertiser, priced from $2198.
  • Mr R E Eldershaw was elected as president of the Wagga branch of the Liberal Party following on from Mr J W Hawkins who declined nomination.
