25 Years Ago

  • Wagga branch president, Paul Murray and members of the Australian American Association welcomed the American Ambassador to Australia, Edward Perkins for a function commemorating the anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea.
  • Nikki Anastas from Hillsdale in Sydney was announced as the Golden Gown Supreme Award winner in front a capacity crowd at the Wagga Leagues Club auditorium.
  • An anonymous letter circulated in recent days in Baylis Street has garnered support from business owners concerned about the future viability of retail trade following completion of a $24 million redevelopment by Woolworths.
  • Chairman of the Calvary Hospital Foundation, Paul Smithson together with Sister Brigid Gleeson drew the winner of Calvary Hospital’s “Trip for Two to Hamilton Island” raffle.
  • Plans for a new Police Station at Wagga have been stalled indefinitely.
  • A family of five dashed from their Kincaid Street home shortly before it was gutted by fire.
  • An MBF mobile heart check van in Wagga has made 134 screenings with a surprising 58.2% of people screened found to have a high risk of developing heart disease.
  • Les and Rosa Bryant celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary at The Haven.
  • Secretary of the Wagga Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Brian Favero presented an award to Boulevarde Motor Inn owner, Nola Ryals recognising their magnificent gardens and contribution to the good image of Wagga as visitors enter the city.
  • Barry Peddle, TAFE Riverina Institute director said that several students attending the Riverina Institute Awards for Excellence this week received State medals and awards for achieving the best results in their chosen field of study.
  • Stuarts Kooringal Store is advertising Arnott’s Mint Slice, Montes, and Tim Tam biscuits for $1.49 a packet and Campbell’s 440g soup varieties for 99 cents.
  • Debbie Stroud has won a raffle courtesy of Wagga Community Transport and is pictured in the Daily Advertiser with Ansett area manager, Glen Vardanega and Community Transport manager, Rosina Grosse.

50 Years Ago

  • Archbishop Eizekeil, head of the Greek Orthodox Church in Australia and New Zealand visited Wagga to discuss the possible appointment of a permanent priest for the city.
  • Patricia Walsh, the youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs P Walsh of the William Farrer Hotel, gained fourth place in the State at the recent NSW Nursing Examinations.
  • Retail giant Myers Ltd hopes to finalise purchase of a site in Baylis Street for a Wagga store development within the next week to 10 days.
  • The Apex – Boy Scouts Annual Jam Drive is being held this Sunday morning to aid Wagga Wagga hospitals, Gumleigh Boys’ home, Loretto Home of Compassion, and the Haven.
  • Wagga Post Office did not open on Saturday morning because of a state-wide postal strike.
  • David Jones 132nd Birthday Sale includes men’s suits from $32, winter sports coats for $20 and corduroy slacks for $6.
  • RSL Club manager, Wal Spokes said that alterations and additions to the Club costing $322,000 would have little effect on members’ normal activities.
  • Promotions expert John Daley in Wagga to address the Wagga Lions Club said that Wagga Wagga was a very marketable name and that the city should promote itself with a slogan like “Wagga – Australia’s friendliest city.”

  • David Jones manager Mr Reg Kelly is being farewelled from Wagga and is pictured along with Mrs Kelly and Mr and Mrs N Souter in the Daily Advertiser at a farewell dinner held at Noah’s Town House.
  • The Gregadoo Rural Youth Club has won the 1970 Ampol award for Southern Riverina district youth clubs.
  • Bernie Weir, president of the Loretto Home of Compassion Auxiliary said that the auxiliary had made a profit of $8208 during the last 12 months.
  • Permewan Food Stores are selling PMU tomato soup 16oz for 11 cents, Flour 2lb for 16 cents and Big Sister 12 oz pudding and rolls for just 25 cents.
  • South Wagga Lions Club has donated thirteen winter dressing gowns to boys at the Gumleigh Boys Home.
  • Miss Wagga Quest entrant, Linda Miller held a successful function attended by about 60 people at Noah’s Town House.
