25 Years Ago

  • The Equal Opportunity Tribunal ordered Wagga City Councillor, Jim Eldridge to pay damages of $3,000 finding complaints against him alleging racial vilification were justified.
  • Councillors Peter Dale and Joe Mason-Cox are among Councillors who have indicated opposition to a proposal by Wagga City Council to create several new staff positions.
  • Ashley Olsson, a director of Marjen Pty Ltd announced that they were ready to start work immediately on a $25 million upgrade of the Sturt Mall.
  • Continuing heavy rain forced the postponement of this week’s Wagga Picnic Races.
  • Wagga solicitor, Anthony Paul has been named as winner of the prestigious 1995 NSW Law Society Solicitors Community Service Award.
  • Mitsue Stockley and Joan Cahill were both recognised for 20 years of service as senior stock keepers at Best and Less in Wagga.
  • Member for Riverina, Noel Hicks and Member for Wagga, Joe Schipp presented Australian and NSW flags to representatives of South Wagga Public School, including principal, Col Kohlhagen, chairman of the school council, Roy Sanders, and school captain Tom Webb.
  • Alison Kendall, an ostrich farmer from Brucedale will represent the Riverina in this year’s ABC Radio, NSW Rural Woman of the Year Award.
  • Meredith Adams came first and Kate Buckley, second in the 10 years scripture reading section at St Andrew’s Junior Eisteddfod.
  • Tijuana Sewing Centre in Baylis are advertising Bernina sewing machines and offering sewing classes.
  • St Michael’s senior hockey team finished as runners up at the NSW combined Catholic Colleges carnival. Luke Spokes was named in the NSWCCC team with James Sheridan and James Dallas announced as shadows.
  • Jim Bean Bourbon 750ml is $22.95 and Toohey’s Draft beer 24 x 375ml bottles just $22.95 a case at Jewell Discount Liquor in Peter Street.
  • Local members of the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia including Gary Roberts, Mary Ann Chance, Ian Hope and Rolf Peters are celebrating Chiropractic Care Week and 100 years of chiropractic.

50 Years Ago

  • One of Wagga’s biggest and most unusual concrete-pouring contracts is underway on the site of Woolworths’ new Big W store in Baylis Street.
  • Wagga District Council of the United Farmers and Woolgrowers Association is asking Wagga City Council to install scales at the Wagga Saleyards to allow liveweight selling of cattle.
  • First year Wagga Teachers College student and former Trinity High pupil, Ann Price gained first and second placings in the open division of the Bi-Centenary Commemorative Festival of Australian Poetry.
  • A total of 191 men in Wagga were unemployed during April while 115 jobs went wanting and there were 256 women unemployed with just 61 jobs available.
  • Wagga Commercial Bowling Club President, Jack Mackenzie was congratulated on the success of his president’s day by Phil Smyth, President of the Commercial Club and Secretary of the Bowling Club, Tom Searle.
  • Wagga Rescue Club hosted the NSW Federation of Rescue Associations conference in Wagga.
  • Lynette Coffey, 12 and Martin Dunkley, 9 were outright winners in Edmondson’s Captain Cook painting competition held over the school holidays.
  • Wagga City Council has taken delivery of a Galion 503 road grader valued at $14,000 to be used in general road maintenance and formation around the city.

  • The Carousel Beauty Salon in the South Town Walk is now under the management of Charlotte Mullins.
  • President of the Wagga Picnic Racing Club, Jon McGeoch, committee members and their wives entertained 150 guests to lunch at Wagga Racecourse for the first day of the picnic race carnival.
  • Young Wagga amateur rider, Mr N Gardiner completed a unique hat trick when he won the Wagga Amateur Picnic Race Club’s Cup on Super Sweet, having previously won the Ardlethan and Cootamundra picnic cups on the horse Diesel.
