25 Years Ago

  • Many civilians who worked on the home front during World War ll will participate for the first time in Wagga’s Anzac Day march this week.
  • Wagga Ratepayers Association president Chris Mooney said that Wagga City Council’s recommendation to reduce garbage bin size from 240 to 120 litres went completely against overwhelming public support for the larger bins.
  • Re-Car Wagga has become the first transport industry repairer to gain quality assurance accreditation.
  • Wagga City Council will spend $500,000 to construct a new two-lane carriageway along Red Hill Road with consideration of a four-lane carriageway being needed in 10 to 15 years.
  • Julie Burkett (Dryden) and Maree Cameron (Batkin) were among those attending a reunion of the Mount Erin High School Class of 1974.
  • Wagga City Council is considering a proposal by Hungry Jack to establish a drive-through restaurant in Hammond Avenue about 80 metres along from Wagga’s Sizzler Restaurant.
  • The Kurrajong Waratah Make a Difference Ball was held at the Kyeamba Smith Hall.
  • The 38th annual ACI bowling tournament was held at the South Wagga Bowling Club.
  • A Wagga man who was arrested and charged with drink-driving offences twice in ten days was ordered by Wagga Local Court to perform 100 hours of community service.
  • Local Wagga businesses have chipped in to purchase a pergola for Wagga Base Hospital with the hospital now appealing for musicians and buskers to use the facility to entertain walking patients.
  • Wagga Model Aero Club is holding its 22nd World War II military scale aircraft competition.
  • President of Wagga Water Polo, Anthony Paul presented a shield to Trinity Senior High School members Jeremy Alchin, Courtney Bourne and Ryan Maloney after Trinity won the Wagga High Schools competition.
  • Freedom Furniture announced that they will establish a new store in the Riverina Plaza in Berry Street.
  • Wagga and District SoccerAssociation, Chris Blake launched the 1995 Soccer Season at the Wagga RSL Club.

50 Years Ago

  • A pine tree grown at “Lone Pine” at Gallipoli was planted on Willan’s Hill by Gallipoli veteran Mr A Secombe as part of this year’s Anzac Day observance.
  • About 300 Wagga Teachers College students marched through Wagga’s main streets to protest the failure of the State Government to substantially increase trainee teacher’s allowances.
  • Mr C Penney from the Department of Main Roads said that Wagga’s Hampden bridge could be under repairs for another nine months.
  • President of the Wagga RSL Club along with Secretary Mr W J Spokes signed a contract for $322,000 with Siebels of Wagga for alterations and additions at the Club.
  • Miss Wagga 1970, Miss Helen Everitt, was given a Mayoral farewell by Mayor, Ald R J Harris on the eve of her trip to Japan for Expo 70.
  • Nelli Ahkolnikova considered by many as the finest woman violinist in the Soviet Union performed in an ABC concert held at Hoyts Theatre.
  • Buckman’s Building Group have started work on renovations at Wagga Base Hospital which will add an additional 25 beds.
  • Huthwaite’s are selling Uncle Tobies Oats in 2lb packets for 31 cents, self-raising or plain flour 2lb packets for 13 cents, bananas for 20 cents per dozen and apples for 23 cents per dozen.
  • Mrs East, wife of Colonel C H A East, Commanding Officer of 1 RTB Kapooka organised a card party in aid of the Loretto Home of Compassion which was attended by about 90 women at Noah’s Town House.
  • Seventeen international conservationists were welcomed to Wagga where they will spend the next three months attending a course in conservation and natural resources.
  • Former Daily Advertiser sporting writer, Peter Baker was one of 450 National Servicemen marching into Kapooka to begin basic training.
