25 Years Ago

  • “Rats of Tobruk” Ed Fielder and Bill Bridle were among those attending a special commemorative service held at the Victory Memorial Cenotaph.
  • John Read and his wife Ros were honoured with life membership of the Kooringal Colts Cricket Club before more than 150 people at a highly successful presentation night.
  • Wagga Softball Association’s member of the year award has been won jointly by Jenny Currie and Tara Mantell.
  • Wagga City Council voted to spend $165,000 on a design competition for a new administration complex expected to cost $12 million.
  • The 13th Riverina Jamborette attended by 1300 scouts aged between 11 and 15 is being held at the Scout Campsite on the Oura Road.
  • Wagga Tennis Association’s division one winners playing for Burgess Concrete were Helen Webb, Jenny McRae and Joanne Andrews.
  • Sturt Mall owners have won a long battle over car park access to Wonderland lane and a fence along the lane is now expected to be erected soon.
  • John (Jack) Jenkins who joined the Post Master General’s Department in 1927 and served for some time as postmaster at Kapooka and RAAF Forest Hill has died at the aged 82 years.
  • A late-model Hyundai hatch-back was torched in Kenneally Street, the second instance of arson in Kenneally Street in as many weeks.
  • Gina Jeffreys, winner of the “Star Maker Quest” at the 1991 Tamworth Music Festival, is performing live on Saturday night at the Leagues Club.
  • Daily Advertiser Promotions Manager at the Daily Advertiser, Peter Brown and Woolworths manager, Glen Watts, assisted by four- and half-year-old Sarah Madden drew Mrs Honor Kells name as winner of a $250 grocery hamper at Woolworths.
  • Louise Rickard has been awarded the Daily Advertiser Charles Sturt Scholarship for 1995.
  • Riverina suffered a tragic defeat 18-17 at the hands of Mid North Coast at the Country Rugby League carnival held at Muswellbrook.

50 Years Ago

  • A large crowd saw about 150 newly trained teachers graduating at the Wagga Teachers College graduation ceremony.
  • About 350 people attended the Wagga Teachers College Graduation Ball held at the Wagga Leagues Club Auditorium.
  • The Mayor of Wagga, Ald R J Harris is chairing the inaugural meeting of the Wagga Regional Council for Children’s Films and Television.
  • Mrs Dawn Weir and her children Diane, Ann and Michael raised $116 participating in a successful “rideathon” held by the Wagga Pony Club to raise money for training equipment.
  • Ross Ingram has joined the sports staff of the Daily Advertiser replacing Peter Baker who enters the army this weekend for two years of National Service.
  • Squadron Leader John Kinder, President of the Officers’ Mess Committee RAAF Forest Hill, presented a cheque to Wagga Legacy President, Mr Andy Ireland and Treasurer Mr Col White.
  • Two Wagga companies, Buckman Building Group and M Rava refrigeration have been awarded major contracts in the new $1.75 million Woolworths development project in Baylis Street.
  • Arthur Summons has been appointed coach of the Australian Kangaroos Rugby League Test Team.
  • Dale and Adrian Nation each won their age group championships at the Mount Austin High School Athletic Carnival. Dale won the under 13 championships and Adrian won the under 16 age group championships.
  • Organisers said that the 33rd St. Andrews Junior Eisteddfod was one of the most successful in recent years.
  • A mass meeting of 400 Wagga Teachers College students voted to hold a protest march along Baylis Street to the Education Department offices in Johnston Street.
  • Wagga ALP branch president, Mr H J McPherson and vice-president, Mr J Skeers said that their branch is in “wholehearted support of the trainee teachers.”
  • Wagga City Council is calling a public meeting to establish a weekend social club for servicemen on leave in the city.
