25 Years Ago

  • A petition has gathered 51 signatures to oppose plans to build a block of four two-storey home units in Travers Street as being the “thin end of a wedge”.
  • More than 1350 people took part in the sixth annual Clean Up Australia Day removing more than 50 tonnes of rubbish from 27 different sites in the Wagga City Council area.
  • Member for Wagga, Joe Schipp has announced a $1 million funding boost to allow Wagga Base Hospital to do away with its General Low Activity Days and slash waiting lists for elective surgery.
  • Jim Rees, from Uranquinty says he will stand as an independent candidate to address environmental issues in the March 25 State election.
  • CSU deputy vice-chancellor, Professor Richard Johnstone and Bishop William Brennan jointly announce the first stage of St Francis College a new residential college to house 150 students at CSU’s Wagga campus.
  • Woolworths announced they would spend up to $40 million on the largest retail development in Wagga’s history to be built behind Woolworth’s Baylis Street supermarket.
  • Outraged Wagga police voted to protest severe staff shortages with industrial action proposed from 13th to 15th March.

50 Years Ago

  • State cabinet announced the route to be followed by the natural gas pipeline from Victoria to N.S.W. with Wagga and Albury to get supply via spur lines from Queanbeyan.
  • Keith Swan, President of the Wagga and District Historical Society has written “A History of Wagga” a 218-page book which can be purchased for $4.50 from the Wagga City Council.
  • Wagga butchers are cutting the last of their meat supplies and livestock agents are reporting the smallest sheep sale in memory as a crippling state-wide meat union strike entered its seventeenth day.
  • A permanent Kooringal telephone exchange has been completed and will initially accommodate 1400 telephone lines.
  • Coolamon Scoutmaster Alan Bredin was subjected to a fully clothed ducking at the District Scouts swimming carnival as he prepares for his marriage this weekend to Coolamon Lady Cubmaster, Miss Margaret Mohomad.
  • Weetbix in the large 24 oz box is 29 cents and Peter’s Ice Cream in a half gallon tub is 62 cents at Edmondson’s.
  • South Wagga Apex and the Wagga Amateur Swimming Club are conducting their annual Water Festival and “Across Lake Albert Swim” event.
  • Record entries have been received for the Wagga Centenary Rodeo this weekend with fifty wild Brahmans and prize money amongst the highest ever paid in Australia.
  • Deputy Mayor, Ald. M Gissing presented certificates to participants in the Kurrajong School swimming carnival with bath’s manager, Bruce Miller looking on.
  • The Minister for Local Government, Mr Morton unveiled a foundation plaque on the centenary wing of the Wagga Historical Museum.
  • Members of The Rock Pony Club visited Wagga Agricultural College to learn about the Arab breed of horses.
  • Wagga district scouts will form a guard of honour for Sir Roden and Lady Cutler during next weeks Wagga Centenary of Local Government celebrations.
