25 Years Ago

  • A crowd of more than 10,000 people turned out for the official opening of Wagga’s Wiradjuri bridge by Wagga’s Mayor, Pat Brassil and Wiradjuri elder Violet Honeysett.
  • Dr Anthony Brettell, medical manpower coordinator for the Wagga and District Division of General Practice said that Wagga was suffering from a shortage of between seven and eleven full-time General Practitioners.
  • Deputy Mayor, John Harding, George Brown of the Ex-POW Association and David Gardiner of the Wagga RSL Sub-branch laid wreaths to mark the anniversary of the fall of Singapore in World War ll.
  • Brian Withers and Lew Sanbrook were presented with 20-year long service awards and Barney Sherring was rewarded for his years of accident-free driving at the Finemore Transport awards night.
  • Former long-serving secretary-manager of the Wagga RSL Club, Wal Spokes who joined the Wagga RSL sub-branch following his discharge from the army in 1947 has died aged 76.
  • Grant Luhrs launched his latest CD album “Campfire” with his Campfire Band at the Civic Theatre.
  • Representatives of Wagga’s four major clubs discussed smoking bans with Member for Wagga, Joe Schipp.
  • Waggaroos Orienteering Club has won the NSW Association’s club of the year award.
  • Wagga Croquet Club members, Edna Hazelwood, Dick Kaylock, Marga Podniers, Lorna Whytcross, Caroline Campbell and Yvonne Langdon successfully defended the Wendy Davidson Trophy in Canberra.
  • Rosina Grosse has been named as a finalist in the inaugural Australian Achievement Awards.
  • Trinity Senior High School principal, Paul Rumble, said that several students including Ruth Evans, John Quinn, Rachael Sweeney and Michelle Rebbechi had been recognised at a special ceremony for the school’s high achievers in last year’s Higher School Certificate.
  • General Manager of 2WG and FM93, John Seaman is attending the Radio Advertising Bureau marketing leadership conference and executive symposium in Dallas, Texas.
  • David Wunsch, Riverina area manager for the Smith Family supported by local musicians, Grant Luhrs and Darren Coggan is promoting a Country Music Festival which it is hoped will become an annual event.
  • Maurice Salmon, a long-time friend has formed a six-member “Support Jim” Committee to support Councillor Jim Eldridge who faces racial vilification action.
  • Roses 500gm chocolates are $7.99 and Pal Dog Food 1.2kg is $1.79 at Cannons Supermarkets.

50 Years Ago

  • A gigantic 120-ton truck carrying a huge generator to Talbingo Dam has been halted at Junee until repairs can be completed to Wagga’s Hampden Bridge.
  • The P.M.G Divisional Engineer, Mr S Turner said that a one-million-dollar project to give Wagga telephone subscribers direct dialling facilities is underway at the new Tarcutta Street exchange.
  • Marea Knott, wardrobe mistress for the Wagga School of Arts said that two hundred and ninety costumes spread over sixty-five bodies will be used for the Revue to be held in conjunction with the Local Government Centenary Celebrations in March.
  • Minister for Mines and Member for Wagga, Mr Fife is confident that a spur line will be built to supply natural gas to the Riverina, including Wagga and Albury.
  • Mr and Mrs Hoitnik, Mr and Mrs Ruvanka, Mr L Lausch, Mr A Da Roit and Mr H Kouwelaar were naturalised as Australian citizens in a simple ceremony conducted at the Council Chambers by Wagga’s Mayor, Ald Harris.
  • Johnny Garfield is featured on Saturday night at the Wagga Leagues Club.
  • David Jones is planning a spectacular fashion parade featuring the best of old and new creations at a gala garden party to be held during Wagga City Council’s Centenary celebrations.

  • Wagga City Council has acquired a new modern liquid gas delivery truck.
  • A committee formed by the Parents and Citizens Association is investigating a change in school uniform at Mount Austin Primary School.
