25 Years Ago

  • Eric Gollan, who was working on a Wagga Milk run, 24 years ago when he decided to join the NSW Police Service has returned to Wagga as the newly appointed Riverina District Police Commander.
  • John Craig, Council Health and Building Services director has warned residents not to use Lake Albert after water contamination following a recent violent rainstorm.
  • Mayor, Pat Brassil predicted that Wagga’s Northern Lake proposed to be more than twice the size of Lake Albert would open in 2001.
  • Kathy Smith, a Wagga Technology High School student and a casual employee at Gissing’s Pharmacy has been named by Wagga Rotary Club as this week’s young achiever of the week.
  • Carmelite Men’s Committee members, Greg Knight, Tony Quinlivan, Brian Hill and John Ryan are planning a 21-day pilgrimage to the Holy Land and Europe a highlight of which will be an audience with Pope John Paul II.
  • Minister for Health, Ron Phillips announced that $757,000 would be allocated for the reconstruction or relocation of Wagga Ambulance Station.
  • Wagga City Council is being criticised for its decision to take over the Pitch ‘n’ Putt course at the old tip site after it was shut down recently.

  • Holy Trinity Parish in West Wagga has stopped hosting Bingo nights the last Catholic parish in Wagga to do so.
  • Bradley Dutschke has arrived from Adelaide to take up the position of Lutheran School principal.
  • Pizza Hut and McDonald’s have won Council approval for extensions to their Fox Street restaurants.
  • Kambie’s Summer Clearance with sizes 10 to 24 includes Pants and Shirt $25, Dresses $45 and Swimmers $49.
  • Peter Linde and Rod Brennan have formed Wagga Bike Tours to enable people to share in the sensation of riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle.

50 Years Ago

  • After 52 years of working for Hardy’s, Mr Varley Seaman was farewelled by Mr E J Rhodes Hardy’s managing director. Also farewelled was Miss M Timms after 29 years of service.
  • Two young men were critically injured when a goods train ploughed into their car at the Edward Street level crossing.
  • Christmas Day was a big day for the Atkinson family in Fox Street with 20-year-old Sandra Atkinson celebrating her birthday and her 21-year old brother Jeffery making it home from service in Vietnam for a weeks R and R leave.
  • Wagga’s fourth Woolworths store will be built soon in Baylis Street on the site previously occupied by Hardy’s.
  • Gas works manager, Charles Krummel said that if natural gas was not available in Wagga soon that additional gas plant will need to be provided.
  • David Jones are selling White Wings cake mix for 19 cents each and 18-ounce cans of Coca-Cola for 11 cents each.
  • Three Wagga Pony Club members, Christopher Cheney, David Cook and Roger Cheney are competing in a State one-day event at Warwick Farm.
  • Malfunctioning of new boom gates at the Docker Street railway crossing has upset motorists and nearby residents.
  • Nine-year-old Janelle Gestier, from Downside is pictured in the Daily Advertiser escaping Wagga’s 96.5-degree heat by frolicking in the waters of Lake Albert.
  • Sister Mary Verona Veerhuis, received her Mission Cross for Missionary work from Bishop of Wagga, Dr F Carroll in a ceremony at St Michael’s Cathedral.
  • Huthwaite’s are selling 4-ounce cans of Baked Beans or Spaghetti for 4 cents each, large packets of Skippy Corn Flakes for 32 cents and No 7 size Tender Talk Chicken for $1.10.
  • A holiday softball coaching clinic begins this week at Bolton Park for players of high school age and above.
