25 Years Ago

  • Farrer League vice-president, Lance Seaman has retired after more than 30 years’ service to Australian football administration.
  • Edna Alice White who was matron of the Wagga Base Hospital from 1954 until 1971 and prior to that matron at Gundagai hospital died recently at Wyoming.
  • Frank Burt, regarded as a legend in the local horse racing industry for his feats as a trainer and accomplishments as one of the area’s best amateur jockeys, has died.
  • Outgoing Kapooka commandant Col. David Kibbey welcomed his replacement Col. David Buchanan.
  • Rumours that Wagga’s Youth refuge was closing following the resignation of five committee members were dismissed by refuge worker, Marj King.
  • Rhonda Winson of Hore and Davies and her husband Grahame are pictured in the Daily Advertiser attending a black-tie Real Estate Institute Awards Dinner in Wagga.
  • St Michael’s High School student Joe Howard was selected in the NSW Country Tour Basketball team.
  • TAFE teachers have begun replacing personnel at Wagga RAAF Base as TAFE takes over a range of advanced technical training courses in the Air Force.
  • Wagga’s eastern industrial estate is continuing to expand with Council approving subdivisions in Hammond Avenue and construction of a large factory in Say Street.
  • Captain of Eagle Boys Legends, Debbie Girling was presented with the A grade premiership shield by Jenny Lewington, manager of Wagga Tuesday night netball.
  • Joan Wilson won the RAFC Women’s Bowling Club major singles championship.
  • Year 11 students, Tara Newcombe and Lisa Moore helped with a guided tour for Tina and Michelle McGregor from Turvey Park School during the Mount Austin High School Year 6 orientation day.
  • John Oliver, a cereal chemist at the Wagga Agricultural Research Institute has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute.
  • A development application for Wagga’s proposed new $7 million police station is expected soon with an architect’s impression now available.
  • Mt Austin Year 11 student, Michael Petts who works on a casual basis at Customs International is this week’s Rotary Youth Service Award winner.
  • Teddy Allison, popular leader for many years of the Ganmain Revellers band, has died in Wagga at the age of 89.
  • Member for Wagga, Joe Schipp cut the ribbon to officially open the new cricket practice nets at Robertson Oval.

50 Years Ago

  • A professional safe cracking gang, believed to be from Sydney stole about $10,000 in unmarked notes in a raid on the offices of W. G. Huthwaite & Co.
  • The Wagga International Club arranged for “St Nicholas” to make his first Wagga appearance at the Council Chambers where he was met by Wagga’s new deputy Mayor Ald M Gissing.
  • Mr Aubrey Milburn Bell, who founded “Bell’s Soft Drinks” with his father in 1931 has died at Calvary Hospital.
  • Brigadier Don Dunstan took the salute during a passing out parade for the October intake of National Servicemen and Regular Servicemen at the Kapooka Military Area.
  • Yvonne Lyons, Jill Dawson, Sandra Graeffe and Beverly Pyle are pictured in the Daily Advertiser attending the Y.W.C.A. Christmas party at the Y.W.C.A. hall in Morrow Street.
  • A man who was arrested when he threatened to “make a bit of noise” with a loaded rifle was fined $60 and placed on $50 twelve months’ good behaviour bond in the Wagga Court of Petty Sessions.
  • The Riverina’s first wine shop, “The Wagga Cellar” has been opened in Lake Road, Kooringal by Don Smith who retired from the local building trade after 20 years.
  • Wagga anglers are baffled over the death of hundreds of carp in Lake Albert.
  • South Wagga Apex Club organised a symposium on Industrial Development in Wagga which has called on both State and Federal Governments to assist.
  • President of the Wagga Quota Club, Joyce Holloway, presented a cheque for $1,000 to Mrs. Heather Marks for the Haven Nursing Home Appeal.
  • Vegemite 4oz jars are just 20 cents, Rosella tomato sauce 10oz bottles just 18c and half-gallon Peter’s ice cream just 57 cents at Permewan’s G&G Discount Centre.
  • Wagga Leagues Club representatives, Geoff Hand and Bill Hunt presented Christmas gifts to boys at the Gumleigh Boys’ Home.
  • Romano’s new Drive-In Bottle Department is now open and selling both Sydney and Melbourne beers.
