25 Years Ago

  • Ray Vallely, manager of Wagga Cemeteries said that vandals had caused damage estimated at $50,000 at Wagga’s Monumental Cemetery.
  • Wagga insurance broker, Peter Brown was presented with the National Insurance Brokers Association, Lex McKeown trophy for outstanding service to the association.
  • Greg Reynold’s principal of St Thomas Aquinas Primary School, Tarcutta has been appointed as the new principal of St Joseph’s primary school in Wagga.
  • Kadi Rayner, a student at Mt Erin High School, has been named as winner of the “Young Achiever in Service Award” conducted by Wagga Rotary Club.
  • Ben Howard will be traveling soon to Brazil and Jason Miller to Japan as Youth Exchange students sponsored by Wollundry Rotary and South Wagga Lions Clubs.
  • Principal, Gerard Madden said that Mt Erin Girls High School is being forced to employ a psychologist or social worker to deal with problems bought to the school by some of its students.
  • Wagga Asthma Swimming Club captains are Gabrielle Hyland and Brett Bryce. The Club coach is John Coombs.
  • Tuesday night netball best and fairest winners are Kate Hawkins, Donna Banks, Sally McKenzie, and Sharon Stephens.
  • Malcolm Levett, 58, a highly respected Australian Football administrator and former assistant principal at Tolland Public School has died at a Sydney hospital after major heart surgery.
  • Wagga City won the Central Riverina Women’s Bowling Association No. 4 pennant and Thelma Lane was the inaugural winner of the Marie Moore Memorial singles trophy at Wagga City Women’s Bowling Club.
  • Wagga businessman, Noel Comerford has ended his 10-year sponsorship of the Group Nine Referees Association.
  • Council’s director of recreational services, Kerry Geale said that Council was considering about 14 submissions lodged over the future development and management of Pomingarlarna Park.
  • Graham Smith is pictured in the Daily Advertiser hanging the last of 45 paintings for the annual Pro Hart Exhibition at the Riverina Galleries.
  • Farrer League president, Trevor Urquhart presented a plaque to Peter Kimpton recognising his 10 years as a member of the Farrer Football League Tribunal.

50 Years Ago

  • Ald R J Harris was unanimously re-elected Mayor with Ald M H Gissing defeating Aldermen, Geoghegan and Toy to become Deputy Mayor.
  • At the Christian Brothers High School speech night 15-year-old Andrew McClure became dux of the school, won the debating prize and the public speaking prize as well as being top of the class in all his seven subjects.
  • Wagga branch president of the Australian Hotels Association, Mr. Eric Sullivan, described the vote against Sunday trading in a recent referendum as “disastrous”.
  • Three Wagga Girl Guides, Sandra McAuliffe, kay Hocking, and Wendy Lane were presented with their Queen’s Badges by District Commissioner, Mrs. W. Hurd.
  • Mayor, Ald R J Harris cooked the first steak on Wagga’s first public gas barbeque, the result of a Wagga Jaycee project.
  • Mr. Cec Carmody, licensee of the Turvey Tavern Hotel presented $92 to an appeal for the family of the late Mr. Roy Hunt, a well-known charity worker in the Turvey Park area.
  • Alderman, Cec Toy claimed there was no need for the appointment of a social worker in Wagga after pleas by the Wagga Interchurch Action Group to appoint one.
  • The Ben Koth group of companies, controlled Wagga’s Koth family for the last 40 years have been sold to William Atkins Pty Ltd, Sydney based steel merchants.
  • Petrol prices will remain at 42 cents per gallon for standard petrol after a review of prices by Prices Commissioner for NSW, Mr. J A Newbigging.
  • Squadron Leader and Mrs. V Carter are pictured in the Daily Advertiser with Mr. Colin Butt attending the Wagga Business and Professional Women’s Club Christmas Party held at the home of Ald Mrs. Helen Frisby.
  • Teacher, Miss B Farrell helped introduce next year’s students from Gurwood Street Primary at Wagga High School’s orientation day.
  • Mrs. Isabel Ireland, RVN-2 hostess is pictured in the Daily Advertiser practicing for a putting competition organised by Wagga Rotary Club to be held at the Victory Memorial Gardens.
  • Wagga branch Red Cross, Christmas party will be held at the Methodist Hall in Johnston Street and will include presentations to multiple blood donors.
