25 Years Ago

  • Member for Wagga, Joe Schipp brushed aside challenges from John Harding and Warwick Hastie to win Liberal Party preselection by 22 votes to 32 for a third decade in State Parliament.
  • Ratepayers Association president, Chris Mooney has criticised Wagga City Council over its handling of the proposed $10 million northern lake development.
  • Clem Welch, currently the principal of De La Salle College in the Archdiocese of Brisbane has been appointed as principal of Mount Erin High School filling the vacancy left by outgoing principal Gerard Madden.
  • Wagga’s Profinance Finance Company has registered a record-making profit of $900,000 for the 1994 financial year.
  • Investment firm Bain and Company has established a local Wagga office with local client advisor, Joe Savenije.
  • The 35th Annual Wagga Wagga Legacy Golf Day is being held at the Wagga Country Club.
  • A Wagga man has pleaded guilty in Wagga Local Court to 18 offences relating to break and enter offences in Lake Albert Road.

  • The Borambola Community Hall has been sold to Robert Shaw who lives next door and plans to establish an art studio and perhaps later an art and craft outlet in the building.
  • Wagga Waratahs life members, Mick Millard, Bob Connolly and Mark Gooden were among guests at the club’s presentation function at Romano’s Hotel.

50 Years Ago

  • David Jones took out a full-page advertisement in the Daily Advertiser congratulating Edmondsons on the opening of their new store in the heart of Wagga at the Golden Square.
  • Edmondson’s opening specials include 60-foot garden hose $1.60, a metal wheelbarrow for $5.50 and eating apples, ten for 30 cents.
  • President of the Wagga Historical Society, Mr Keith Swan has appealed to Wagga City Council not to enforce the removal of the post-supported verandah around the Union Club Hotel.
  • About 50 friends attended a 21st Birthday Party for Mr Lindsay Swan at the Koala Motel.
  • Deputy Premier, Mr C B Cutler announced the appointment of the interim council for the new Riverina College of Advanced Education with Wagga dentist, Peter Hastie to lead as chairman.
  • Wagga Chamber of Commerce President, Jack Skeers said he was concerned at the lack of support members were giving to the Chamber.
  • Maples are selling Saucer Chairs with vinyl floral overlay for just $6.50.
  • John Coombes won the Maurice Geaghan trophy for the best and fairest junior at the Turvey Park Rugby League Club banquet night.
  • Mr and Mrs Bill Douglas hosted a farewell party, at their home in Wollundry Avenue, for Mr and Mrs Russ Lellman who are leaving Wagga after 19 years in the city.
  • 14-year-old, Peter Austen playing the French Horn won a special award for the most promising instrumentalist, other than a pianist at the Wagga Eisteddfod.
  • Manager of the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney, Mr R W H Bennett was given a civic farewell by the Mayor Ald. Harris.
  • Mrs A Webb was elected President of the Wagga Ambulance Auxiliary with Mrs Porter and Mrs Browne elected as vice presidents and Miss T Willis as secretary.
  • Sixteen-year-old Girl Guide Penelope Braines of Turvey Park was presented with the Queens Guide Badge.
  • Grace Bros. Removals have opened a new branch in Wagga with manager Mr Rowland Alcorn.
