25 Years Ago

  • Minister for Veterans Affairs, Con Sciacca unveiled a monument in the Victory Memorial Gardens to commemorate members of the 8th Division AIF who died at Sandakan and during the infamous “death march” to Ranau in Northern Borneo between 1942 and 1945.
  • Wagga based transport group Finemore Holdings boosted after-tax profit last financial year by nearly $280 percent to $7.589 million with sales for the year reaching $188.5 million.
  • Japanese Rotarians are visiting Wagga to discuss with members of the Kooringal Rotary Club the naming of Hiroshima in Japan as the world’s third Rotary International “peace city”.
  • Catholics in the Wagga diocese witnessed altar girls serving at morning mass for the first time at Sacred Heart Kooringal.
  • State President of the University of the Third Age, Betty Heaton hosted a public meeting aimed at forming a branch of the university in Wagga.
  • John Shearer, of Home Tavern and Jayne Taylor, of Romano’s, were the highest-ranked men and women players in the Amarda-Jack Daniels 8-Ball Pool Competition.
  • Stan McMahon, 71 who took up running only a few years ago, crossed the line in the Olympic Way marathon from Junee to Wagga in a time of 5:16.40 bettering his 1992 performance.
  • Wagga Friends of the Library President, Gretchen Sleeman, said the group supported the proposed redevelopment of the Northside shopping complex into a cultural centre.
  • About 50 people representing alcohol outlets attended a four-hour seminar with police and other NSW government officials aimed at reducing the sale of alcohol to intoxicated people and juveniles.
  • A Wagga greyhound trainer was convicted and fined $1500 plus $46 costs for trapping a possum in bushland near Wagga Beach.
  • Peter Hood, regional organiser of the Public Service Association said that Wagga will be left without a vocational guidance service at the end of this month.
  • President of the South Wagga Bowling Club, Charlie Brown presented Wes Russell with a cheque for $711 the proceeds of a recent bowls day for the Red Nose Appeal.
  • Wagga women, Megan Carter, Dianne McAlister, Marion Chisholm, Helen Lansdown, and Joan Reeves have been selected to represent NSW in the National Veterans Hockey Championships in Tasmania.
  • A meeting of more than 150 residents at which Mayor, Pat Brassil, and project consultant, David Chesterman fielded a barrage of questions and criticism largely rejected two proposals for a massive civic centre development.
  • Increases in Government excise duty has taken the price of middy of full-strength beer to around $1.80 in most Wagga pubs.

  • Member for Wagga, Wal Fife said he was “completely flabbergasted” by criticism made by Wagga’s Mayor, Ald Harris about the amount of money allocated to the Riverina College of Advanced Education.
  • 800 RAAF cadets are taking part in two camps at the Forest Hill RAAF Base.
  • George Brown, Bill Inglis, and Brian Lawrence have all been elected or re-elected to the Riverina Cricket Council.
  • Eighteen-year-old, Graeme Haley, a former student of St. Michaels Regional High School has been selected from applicants around the world to attend a Rotary-sponsored scholarship to an American university college.
  • Five children were each sentenced to a month in a Police Shelter and a year of probation on a total of 24 charges of stealing money from public telephone booths.
  • Popular TV and Club singer, Bryan Davies, is in Wagga for appearances at the David Jones fashion parades.
  • A tender for $161,000 from Buckman Building Group has been accepted for construction of the first stage of the new Tolland Public School.
  • A Wagga storekeeper was fined $25 for selling adulterated milk with Milk Board Officer, Richard Shorten estimating a deficiency equal to 5.6% added water.
  • John Rosengreen is producing Mt Austin High School’s production of “Annie Get Your Gun” which commences soon at the Civic Theatre.
  • Rev Keith Brooks said that Wagga’s Meals on Wheels service has served enough meals since its establishment seven years ago to feed twice the cities population for a day.
  • CWA Wagga branch president, Mrs C Silverstone said the Wagga Branch will have a birthday party soon to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the opening of CWA House in Wagga.
  • Nineteen-year-old, Jill Marsden is the latest entrant in this year’s Miss Wagga Quest.
  • Army cadets from Wagga High School who were in camp at Singleton have been forced by wet weather to return home.
  • Ian Measday drove his outboard craft, Seamayd to achieve the highest point score for the day at Lake Albert.
