25 Years Ago

  • Local cardiologist, Gerard Carroll representing the National Heart Foundation presented Heart Foundation awards to Wagga Community Health and Junee Council.
  • Public exhibition of Councils “Lake Albert Draft Catchment Management Plan” has attracted about twenty submissions. Further public opinion will be discussed at a special committee meeting to be held soon.
  • Wagga’s newest welfare facility “Peppers” was officially opened with Anglican Bishop of Canberra and Goulburn the Right Reverend George Browning in attendance.
  • President of the Wagga Asthma Foundation, John Vrolyks received a computer and printer package donated by Wollundry Rotary Club and Mount Austin High School.
  • Wagga Detective Michael Burns said eight police officers had been involved in recent raids on two Wagga homes which resulted in several arrests and found between 100 and 200 grams of cannabis leaf.
  • John Seaman from Launceston has been appointed as the new general manager for 2WG and FM93.
  • Veteran Stan McMahon is the oldest runner competing in this years Olympic Way marathon covering 42 kilometres from Junee to Wagga.
  • Wagga Mutual Credit Union donated $1600 to the Wagga City-to-Lake fun run committee. General Manager, Jim Hatfield and Business Development Manager, Ian Lloyd presented the cheque to City-to-Lake president Brian Buckley and committee member, Pat Coombs of 2WG.
  • Bishop of Wagga, William Brennan blessed the new administration block at Henschke Primary School which opened this week.
  • An estimated $5,000 damage was caused to a brick and tile cottage at Ashmont and is being investigated as a suspected arson attack.
  • Annette Passlow celebrated 15 years working for Suzanne Grae.
  • Tree plantings, angle parking and construction of an amphitheatre near the Riverine Club have been recommended by a study commissioned by Fitzmaurice Street “Bridge to Bridge” Committee.
  • Rae Edwards, Narelle Beazley and Isabel and John Ireland were among those attending the recent launch at Riverina Galleries of Fran Kendall’s book “To Touch the Earth”.

50 Years Ago

  • Dr. William Merrylees, founder of the Riverine University League collapsed and died at his property near Carrathool.
  • Dynamic rover, Greg Hardie became the third North Wagga player in the third decade to win the Baz Medal for the Farrer League’s best and fairest player.
  • The NSW v Victoria junior wrestling tournament was held at the Wagga Police Boys Club.
  • Murrumbidgee Turf Club President, Mr. O K Tyson reported to the club’s annual meeting that $34,000 had been spent on four major improvements at Wagga racecourse during the last year.
  • Boys’ and girls’ nylon parkas are just $4.95 and boys’ fleecy lined skivvies just 89 cents in Edmondson’s final winter clearance.
  • A 39 year-old Wagga man was killed when his panel van and a semitrailer collided and burst into flames at the intersection of Edward and Docker Streets.
  • Member for Wagga, Mr. Wal Fife announced plans for major extensions Wagga’s two Government high schools, including a new assembly hall at Wagga High School and the next stage of construction at Mt Austin High School.
  • The proposed Wagga College of Advanced Education will receive $1,150,000 in capital finance and $2 million for recurrent expenditure in the 1970-72 triennium.
  • Wagga’s Mayor Ald R J Harris was disappointed with the allocations particularly as Bathurst College of Advanced Education, was allocated $3,249,000 in capital and $3.2 million in recurrent expenditure.
  • Branch Manager, Mr. R D Williams said that more than $50,000 worth of alterations and additions have been made to the South Wagga Branch of the Commonwealth Bank.
  • Wagga girls, Diane Mulqueeney, Robyn Wild, and Ann Mitchell all aged 9 are the winners of the country NSW “D” grade gymnastic competition for 10 year-year-olds and under.
  • The Postmaster-Generals Department has vacancies for technicians’ assistants with an adult salary up to $105.58 per fortnight and labourers, up to $89.52 per fortnight both including 3 weeks annual leave and liberal sick leave.
