25 Years Ago

  • Council has delayed a decision on its proposed new cultural and civic development deciding that more public input into the project was needed.
  • Reverend Ron Cook will join the Reverend Steve Wilson in ministering to Wagga’s Uniting Church parish after recently returning to Australia after three years in Lafeyette, Ohio in mid-west USA.
  • Heck Skeers who started out as a coach builder has retired after working for 44 years with Olsen and Sons.
  • Mount Erin College Principal, Gerard Madden announced his resignation this week in the school’s weekly newsletter and will leave the school at the end of this year.
  • Wagga’s BI-LO supermarket in the Riverina Plaza on the corner of Berry and Forsyth Streets is closing this week.
  • Wagga City Council is increasing staff in several areas including Engineering and Technical Services and Health and Building Services.
  • Jeffery Aitken has received a highly commended award from Member for Wagga, Joe Schipp in recognition of his “tireless commitment to water safety in the Riverina”.
  • Wagga’s new chief of Police, Chief Inspector, Kevin Moore has ruled out any plans for a major shakeup of the Wagga Patrol.
  • Brigadier J J Shelton played his final tune for the Australian Army Band Kapooka during this week’s Music at Midday concert at the Civic Theatre.
  • Wagga High School is hosting a group of French students from the Jules Ferry High School in Paris this week.
  • Graham Pyne has taken charge of the Wagga Ambulance after spending eight years eight years with the ambulance service in Tumut.
  • Gordon Moore has opened a new business, Bomen Rural Property Marketing at Lewington Street, Bomen.

50 Years Ago

  • Mrs Clarrie Hall celebrated her 70th birthday with family, including lots of grandchildren at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr and Mrs Ron Hall.
  • Wagga businessman, Don Kendell has been pre-selected as the Country Party candidate for the Federal seat of Farrer, which includes Wagga.
  • Penguin Club members, including Mrs S G Mawhinney from Albury and Mrs J S Waddell and Mrs M Papworth from Wagga attended a special luncheon at the Koala Motel.
  • The Minister for Education and Science and member for Wagga, Mr Wal Fife announced that tenders for the new Tolland Public School will close on 18th August.
  • Branch President, Mrs D Lillie said that Wagga Red Cross had raised $2839.27 last year of which $850 was sent to headquarters in Sydney.
  • Sister McFadyen Sister-in-charge at the Wagga Blood Bank said that 2944 donors came forward last year with 1,261 bottles of blood send to Sydney and 1,660 bottles used in Wagga and surrounds.
  • Sweet coastal mandarins are 10 for 15 cents and Jonathan apples 15 for 15 cents at Fulham Gardens, next to Edmondsons.
  • A 26-year-old man who escaped from legal custody in Wagga while awaiting extradition to another state was sentenced to six months hard labour in Wagga Quarter Sessions.
  • Mrs Marjorie Hamill has returned to Wagga after representing Wagga Quota Club at the fiftieth anniversary Quota International Convention in Washington DC.
  • The Kooringal Public School Parents and Citizens Association has asked that its principal be relieved of teaching duties “to devote the time necessary to the administration of the school” which now has an attendance of 615 students.
  • At meeting held at the RSL Hall in Baylis Street, President, Mrs H Fearne, presented life membership of the RSL Auxiliary to foundation member Mrs C Doyle after her twenty-seven years of service.
  • Darrel Lea chocolates are now available from a section within Huthwaites Wagga store.
  • Wagga’s Mayor, Ald R J Harris was delighted to hear that the NSW Government has stressed the need for consideration to be given to towns in Southern NSW being able to use natural gas.
  •  Wagga High School students are presenting H.M.S. Pinafore by Gilbert and Sullivan at the Civic Theatre.
  • The flu virus sweeping the Riverina has cut school attendances by up to 10%.
