25 Years Ago

  • District Agronomist, Steve Sutherland said recent rain “looked promising” but follow up falls were needed.
  • Milton Breust a member of Council’s Industrial Promotions Committee expressed concern that a median strip along Edward Street would affect existing businesses.
  • The AIDS Council of New South Wales has reacted angrily to comments made by Cr Jim Elridge about a gay and lesbian ball proposed for Wagga.
  • Cr Ron Harris is quoted in the Daily Advertiser saying that “The growth Industry today is consultants”.
  • University Theatre Ensemble (UTE) defended the use of vulgar language in its latest production, Once a Catholic.
  • Wagga Ratepayers and Citizens Association President, Chris Mooney, has called on Wagga City Council to sink more testing bores at the Gregadoo tip after concerns expressed by Dr Louis Du Plessis.
  • Cannon’s Kooringal and Gurwood Street stores are seeking public support calling for trading restrictions on Sunday trading to be lifted.
  • Council’s Director of recreation services said that illegal collection of wood from Pomingalarna Park threatened the area’s fauna.
  • Wagga media personality John Duncan most recently presenter of the popular radio program Sunday Sound aired on 2WG, has died.

  • The Development Corporation of NSW predicts that Wagga should be the State’s biggest country city with a population of 77,500 by the turn of the century.
  • Former Wagga Boy, Peter Whiting, now one of Melbourne’s top solo singing artists is returning to Wagga for the “Pacesetter” event at the Kyeamba Smith Hall.
  • Ten people from Greece, Japan, Germany, Yugoslavia, Hungary and The Ukraine were naturalised by Wagga’s Mayor, Ald R J Harris.
  • Richard Gray, president of Wagga Apex presented winner of the Apex Dental Week competition, Mr Alan Newbound with a $20 open order from Huthwaites.
  • Wagga Mayor, Ald R J Harris will be among the walkers in this year’s Community Aid Abroad “walkathon” raising funds for a beef cattle unit in Java.
  • Mr Joe MacManamon, a native of Ireland who came to Wagga two years ago has been selected from 19 applicants as Wagga’s first full-time Industrial Promotions Officer.

  • Wagga Veteran and Vintage Motor Club have been allocated its own number plate series coinciding with the club’s Veteran, Vintage and Classic Motorcycle Rally this weekend.
