25 Years Ago

  • A racial vilification complaint made against Councillor Jim Eldridge will be taken to the Equal Opportunities Tribunal after terms of settlement conciliated by the Anti-Discrimination Board were rejected by Councillor Eldridge.
  • The latest edition of the CSU student magazine, Hungappa, published by Rivcoll Union has caused outrage in the Wagga Community being variously described as “pornographic”, “vulgar” and “garbage”.
  • Wagga City Council’s director of health and building services, John Craig, was awarded a “most distinguished graduate prize, on receiving his Bachelor of Applied Science (Environmental Planning) degree from Charles Sturt University.
  • Council’s director of planning and development services, Ian Graham, has added to his qualifications with a Master of Planning degree from the University of Technology.
  • The Riverina Rural Health Training Unit at Wagga Base Hospital has failed to attract any general practitioners to its Rural Employment Locum and Inservice Training program.
  • Wal Breust has been appointed to the NSW regional council of the First National real estate network.
  • Monsignor Mick Lane celebrated his 65th year in the priesthood with a family gathering at the Home of Compassion.
  • Sturt Mall management has donated $5000 to the Wagga Police Citizens Youth Club to assist their crime prevention programs.
  • Knights Meats are selling Racks of Lamb for $2.75 and marinated Chicken Wings for $2.55 Kg.
  • Moorong Street has been upgraded at a cost of $5 million in preparation for the Gobba bridge currently under construction.
  • Wagga Christian College’s, two aerobic teams both gained third placings in the regional finals of Schoolaerobics held in Albury.
  • Four Weddings and a Funeral, starring Hugh Grant is screening at the Plaza Twin cinema.
  • McEwan’s Hardware are selling household brooms for $2.95 and water saving shower heads for $7.95.

50 Years Ago

  • Nineteen-year-old Michael Nye has been chosen as a finalist for the State Apprentice of the Year title in carpentry.
  • Thirty primary and infants’ schoolteachers from throughout the Riverina attended the State’s first teacher’s music camp at the Borambola National Fitness Camp.
  • More than 850 people saw 45 debutantes presented to Wor. Bro. W Page at this year’s Masonic Ball in the Kyeamba Smith Hall.
  • V.A.D. members are sitting their home nursing exam at Wagga Base Hospital with Dr R Holmes and Sister J Perrott as examiners.
  • Ald Ethel Geoghegan was guest speaker at a meeting of the Riverina Women Graduates Association speaking about Women in Local Government.
  • Popular secretary-manager of the Wagga Golf Club, Mr John Joseph (Jack) Jones, 59, died suddenly.
  • Colin Duff and Peter Graham, members of the Fourth Wagga group have been awarded Queen’s Scout badges, the highest award in scouting.
  • Wagga Magpies are represented in the 6 stone Riverina Rugby League side by Wally Richards and Peter Mortimer who have been presented with boots and a blazer by Magpies captain-coach, Arthur Summons.
  • NSW Liquor Trades Union has threatened to cut off beer supplies to nearly all of Wagga’s 19 hotels unless their employees join the Union.
  • Movies, fashion parades, a model aircraft display and more than $100,000 worth of bargain merchandise are a feature of David Jones birthday celebrations.
  • Mr G Brownlow from Rand Public School is the new headmaster at North Wagga Public School.
