25 Years Ago

  • Henwood Park Hawks, unbeaten in the past three soccer seasons were beaten in a shock result by Charles Sturt University two goals to one.
  • Members of the Magpies 1944-45 teams held a reunion at the Wagga Leagues Club and attended the Group Nine match between Wagga rivals Magpies and Kangaroos which was won 34 to 16 by Magpies.
  • Ted Coupe and Charles Houen with Ron Finemore inspect a new PABX phone system installed at the Forrest Centre which has been donated by Finemore Holdings.
  • Belinda Penny, 17, and Sharni Meyer, 15, members of the Wagga Venturers abseiled from the RAAF Base water tower.
  • NRMA Wagga area manager Michael Wynne said the number of car theft and car break-in claims received from the Wagga local government area had more than tripled in 1993.
  • The Wagga Stamp Club held its annual stamp and coin fair at the Sturt Public School.
  • Tracey Logan, Leah Brown and Kelly Wardman are pictured in the Daily Advertiser at the St Andrews Scottish Debutante Ball.
  • Mayor, Pat Brassil presented “Tidy Town Awards” to several businesses including the Victoria Hotel and Riverina Wool Combing.
  • A Walton’s store reunion of “former work mates” was held at the Wagga Leagues Club.
  • Smashing a glass door after being removed from a Wagga Hotel resulted in a fine of $200 (plus compensation of $227) for a Wagga woman.
  • The Visitor and Tourist Information Centre in Tarcutta Street celebrated its 15th anniversary with Mayor Pat Brassil and Councillor Kay Hull on hand to cut the cake and help staff celebrate.
  • The Miss Wagga Quest was launched this week at the Riverina Galleries.
  • Showery conditions did not prevent outstanding performances at this week’s District PSSA cross Country Carnival held at the Botanic Gardens Fitness Trail.
  • Wagga’s richest person, Stan Henwood has been dropped from the annual list of 200 wealthiest people. His annual wealth was put at $32 million last year.
  • Anglican Bishop, the Right Reverend George Browning launched a $250,000 appeal for Careforce a welfare arm of the Anglican Church in Southern New South Wales and the ACT.

50 Years Ago

  • Well known footballer, commentator and former Turvey Park Australian Rules Football Club President, Galva Nitschke has had one eye removed after a wood chopping accident.
  • Dennis Blackett played an exuberant Tom Jones, Ethna Mullen played Molly and Betty Herr played Susan in the Wagga School of Arts performance of Tom Jones produced by John Trevor.
  • Bill Van Wel, president of Wagga’s International Club formed earlier this month said the Club’s first function would be a social this week at the South Wagga Bowling Club.
  • The first Wagga Rovers Old Boys’ Reunion Dinner was held at the Koala Motel with those attending coming from as far as Sydney, Orange, Matong and Albury.
  • Mr Bob Chapman, President of the Turvey Park Rugby League Club for the last three years has died at the age of 54.
  • David Jones has a vacancy for an experienced saleswoman aged 21 to 40 years enjoys meeting people and is of neat appearance, with a pleasant personality.
  • Aldermen, Ethel Geoghegan and Helen Frisby attended the Australian Local Government Women’s Association conference in Grafton.
  • Member for Wagga and Minister for Mines, Wal Fife said that Australia’s first atomic power station was likely to be built in NSW with a site being announced before the end of the year.
  • Fulham Gardens are selling Jonathan apples 15 for 25 cents, grapefruits for 12 cents each and celery for 18 cents a bunch.
  • Mrs Anthony Carlisle of “Tywong” Ladysmith was pictured in the Daily Advertiser wearing a caramel and cream fur coat on the first day of the Wagga Picnic Races.
  • Pam Gestier of Wagga is the first 1969 finalist in the Miss Rugby League competition run by the Wagga Kangaroos football club.
  • Hore and Davies Travel Service in Fitzmaurice Street are advertising special expo tours to attend Expo 70 to be held next year in Osaka, Japan.
  • Left-hander, Alan Dunkley won the men’s singles table tennis championship held at the Wagga Leagues Club.
