25 Years Ago

  • A generous donation of $80,000 by Ladysmith man, Neville Parramore, to the Horses Facilities Council for the Kooringal Road multi-purpose centre was recognised by the presentation of a plaque.
  • Hockey Association president, Ann Paul and Council director of recreation services, Kerry Geale are pictured in the Daily Advertiser at Jubilee Park as work begins on the second synthetic surface there at a cost of $330,000.
  • Several Wagga Roller Skating Club members won medals at the first league competition in Sydney.
  • Wagga welder and inventor, Peter Dominguez has produced a “Disabled Art Rest Toilet Support” (DARTS) which is attracting international interest.
  • John Mueller and Yvonne Braid, co-chairs of the Haven board presented life membership to former board members, Colin White and Wendy Hucker.
  • President of the Wagga Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Michael Wynne said he did not believe retail rents were extraordinarily high considering Wagga is the prime regional city in NSW.
  • Wagga City Council works committee has rejected a suggestion by Councillor Roger Gregory to offer a place on the committee to a taxi driver representative.
  • Director of the Emergency department at Wagga Base Hospital, Joe McGirr said the hospital appreciated a $65,000 upgrade of the department announced by Health Minister, Ron Phillips.
  • John Vrolyks, President of the Wagga Asthma Foundation presented a new nebuliser pump to Suzie Wakefield, director of the Central Wagga Day Care Centre.
  • School captains at Ashmont Public School are Shannon Perkins, Danielle Curtois, Rebecca Fondacaro and Nathan Fuller.
  • Residents in the Jasmin Crescent and Vincent Road area have endorsed a Wagga City Council pilot project to use recycled water on their private gardens.
  • Angry Wagga City Councillors have again called for the Mayor, Cr Pat Brassil to be reinstated to the Riverina Regional Development Board.
  • Big changes are being floated by Wagga City Council for inner city roads which possibly include Brookong Avenue becoming a cul-de-sac near Lewis Drive.

50 Years Ago

  • Well known Wagga sportsman, Max Earsman celebrated his 21st birthday with 130 relatives and friends at the Lake Albert Hall.
  • Rev K Brooks from Wagga’s Methodist Church said that more volunteers are needed urgently for Wagga Meals on Wheels.
  • Fosseys who first came to Wagga in 1930 has opened a new store on the same site on the corner of Johnston and Fitzmaurice Streets.
  • Opening specials at Fosseys include men’s corduroy trousers for $5.95, crew socks for 69 cents and casual jackets for $7.45.
  • Water flooded the road entrance to the Wagga Country Golf Club after a cloudburst of two inches within half an hour.
  • Manager of David Jones, Mr Reg Kelly presented Miss Wagga, Miss Dawn Lowe with a Timex watch for her trip overseas.
  • The Wagga Apex Clubs’ Annual Wood Drive will commence soon with hill gum wood for $8 per cubic ton.
  • Soren Jensen and Elaine Hackett bowled well in games at the Wagga Bowling Centre last week.
  • Wagga DLP branch president, Mr J Van der Rijt said that their branch will ask Federal Senators to route a proposed natural gas pipeline through major country towns of northern Victoria and Southern NSW.
  • Wagga Quota Club President, Mrs B Whiting and Treasurer Mrs D Osmond presented a cheque for $200 to Police-Citizens Boys’ Club supervisor, Sgt. Pat Kain.
  • Despite the loss of opening bowler, C Maddock on the first day’s play, Trinity High School beat Wagga High in the Byrnes Shield match at Bolton Park.
  • Stan Blakemore, president of the Wagga Archers said a group of Wagga archers will attend the 22nd national tournament in Adelaide.
  • Pam Fuller and Kay Holding are representing the Wagga CWA at the Riverina Group meeting to be held at Lockhart.
