There were several floods in the 1950s, the worst in 1950 (10.13 metres), 1952 (9.45 m) and 1956 (9.58 m) when 1200 North Wagga-ites had to be evacuated.
It was after these floods that Wagga Wagga City Council decided to provide levee bank protection for the city area on the south flood plain. North Wagga and the eastern industrial areas were excluded from the protection. The main levee was commenced in 1960 and completed in 1962.
