25 Years Ago

  • Principal of Mount Austin High School welcomed new staff members including Sharon Lewis, Kate Killalea, Di Johnston, Dianne McGuire, Tony Boatman, Puong Nguyen and John Lynch.
  • Gary Deaner was congratulated on 15 years of accident-free driving by Finemore’s managing director, Ron Finemore.
  • Diocesan director of education, Peter O’Brien said staff levels for schools in the Wagga Catholic Diocese had been trimmed to allow for a two per cent pay rise for teachers.
  • Wagga Croquet Club won the newly established Wendy Davidson Trophy with Edna Hazelewood and Jo Stein successful winners in their respective groups.
  • Australian Guarantee Corporation Limited (AGC) is closing its long-standing Wagga office throwing four people out of work.
  • Two 16-year-old youths were arrested by police for the attempted armed robbery of Wagga Cellars in Lake Albert Road.
  • Wagga and District Cricket Association defeated Temora by one run in the Stribley Shield match at the Wagga Cricket Ground.
  • Wagga City Council approved a budget of $50,000 for a new convention guide promoting Wagga as a conference host city.
  • Geoff Hubbard is opening the first Forty Winks store in NSW in the Huthwaite Centre in Baylis Street.
  • Gladys and Bill Seberry are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary.
  • A large crowd of more than 4000 attended the Ansett Travel Fair in Wagga.
  • Wagga Kangaroo’s annual fundraiser the MMI Fish-O-Rama attracted hundreds of eager anglers to the shores of Lake Albert.
  • Wagga’s Riverina Theatre Company is joining with three other regional theatre organisations to produce the comedy play, Choice and take it around country NSW.

50 Years Ago

  • The Riverina’s protracted heatwave was “washed away” by torrential rains.
  • Wagga Apex Club president, Bill Abigail said that the Club’s swimming and raft races across Lake Albert would return this year after a two-year lapse.
  • David Jones, Edmondson’s, Coles and the Australian Arcade are jointly constructing a car park for 1000 cars with entrances off Gurwood, Trail and Johnston Streets.
  • Dux of Trinity High School, Peter Donohue who is studying medicine at the University of NSW was awarded the Christian Brothers Old Boys Association award by the Associations president, Mr Tom Berrigan.
  • A stop work meeting of about 40 part-time taxi drivers agreed to form as association to discuss grievances with the Wagga Radio Cabs Co-operative.
  • Prefect Master at Mt Austin High School, Mr Stan Dacey is pictured in the Daily Advertiser with school captains and prefects after they had been inducted by Area Director of Education, Mr Swan.
  • Manager of the Fertilizer and Grain Division of Fife’s Produce, Mr Max Croker announced the opening of a new $50,000 bulk storage depot for fertilizer and grain seed in Norton Street.
  • Daring thieves broke into Loch’s Pharmacy in Baylis Street escaping with a safe containing $1,000.
  • Mr W L Hurd, President of the Wagga School of Arts was re-elected with Mr N Rollins and Mr P Barton elected as vice-presidents.
  • Wagga Leagues Club has paid $2000 to bring famous American singer, Billy Daniels and his four-man backing group to Wagga.
  • Mr Joe O’Connor who was the first ever president of the Turvey Park Australian Rules Club died, aged 84.
  • Mr Charlie Whiting has been re-elected president of the Wagga Leagues Club’s Golf Club with vice-presidents, Messrs A Summons and R Ball.
