25 Years Ago

  • With the start of a new school year there are now about 4400 students attending public primary schools and 3000 attending public secondary schools.
  • Bob Smith from the Department of Education said that with changes to the Higher School Certificate there would be greater co-operation between schools and the Wagga TAFE.
  • Peter O’Brien is the new Director of Schools for Wagga Catholic Diocese with Peter Dewhirst as the new principal of St Michael’s Regional High School and Paul Rumble as the new principal at Trinity Senior High School.
  • Morris Hetherington scored a hole-in-one at the Wagga Country Club, while Lionel Love won the monthly medal with Allan Collins and D. Agnew just one stroke behind.
  • Residents in new housing developments including Jubilee Heights should have telephone services within two weeks after waiting up to three months.
  • The Bistro has reopened at the Shanty Hotel under the management of Russell Myers.
  • Ron “Rusty” Bateman was farewelled by well-wishers including present and former employees of the Daily Advertiser at a retirement dinner held in his honour.
  • Father and son combination Garry and Anthony Williams each won their divisions of the NSW Tiger Class sailing championships held at Lake Albert.
  • Ray Tuck from the Roads and Traffic Authority said that preliminary results indicated a solid footing for Gobba Bridge piles and that the bridge should be completed by June 1998.
  • Wagga City Council approved the construction of a manufactured homes facility on Hammond Avenue, submitted by Wagga builder, Kerry Pascoe.
  • A lightning strike caused extensive damage to a farm house at Oura.
  • Wes Russell from L J Hooker tapped into a buyers’ market with five auctions attracting good-sized crowds.

50 Years Ago

  • Wagga City Council called for “a full and detailed” report from manager Mr L. L. Bird to locate the cause of a marked decrease in business at the city abattoir.
  • Wing Officer Betty B Docker from Wagga has been appointed Matron-in-Chief of the RAAF Nursing Service.
  • Former star Alan Grentell has returned to Turvey Park after playing recent seasons in Sydney and the Farrer and Central Riverina Leagues.
  • Wagga Lions Club launched a public contest with $50 prizemoney for the best design to improve the central lawn area at the front of the Turvey Park Shopping Centre.
  • Mr Don McRae, administration officer at Hardy’s Joinery said telephone exchange system would allow external calls without needing the switchboard and provide complete internal communications between their Baylis and Chaston Street businesses.
  • Wagga City Council has expressed sympathy for motorists booked after failing to see a “no parking” partly obscured by trees in Morrow Street.
  • Uncertainty about the water level in Lake Albert is believed responsible for the Australian Outboard Championships being allocated to Glenburn Dam, Scone.
  • Walton’s are advertising ironing boards for $13.95, Beach Umbrellas for $9.50, bathroom scales for $9.95 and extension ladders for $16.95.
  • Nine members of the Royal Malaysian Air Force began 23 weeks training at the Forest Hill RAAF Base.
  • The Col Joye Circuit Show is playing at the Wagga Leagues Club with Col Forrell’s Band.
  • George Graham won a car as first prize in the first Wagga Lions Club Art Union drawn by Mayor, Ald R J Harris.
  • Two Wagga truck drivers were badly burned in a fire which completely destroyed a lorry and semitrailer on the Tumbarumba Road near Book Book.
