25 Years Ago

  • Wagga’s Citizen of the Year for 1994 is former SES controller and engineer, Colin Knott. Young citizen of the year is former Kooringal High School student Naomi Coggins with Achievement Awards presented to John Vrolyks, Tony Quinlivan and Greg Conkey.
  • Jim Elphick as named as the Ted Ryder Memorial Award winner for his contribution to tennis.
  • Five Wagga residents, William Fife, John Rhodes, David Kennedy, John Gibson and Warrant Officer John Selmes were awarded the Medal of Australia (OAM) is this years Australia Day Honours.
  • Don Smith is advertising great Australia Day Wine specials at the Wagga Winery on Oura Road.
  • The 47th annual Telstra Sporting Challenge played between Sydney and Melbourne Telstra offices was again held in Wagga.
  • Harold Fife celebrated his 75th Birthday and his award of the Medal of the Order of Australia with a family gathering at the Wagga RSL Club.
  • An opening partnership of 145 between Neil Morton and Marc Vincent set Wagga on track for an easy win over Griffith in the Hedditch Cup match at Wagga Cricket Ground.
  • Spokeswoman, Neneth Cooper said that the main event of this year’s Carnivale celebrations was an international food, music and dance festival at the Kyeamba Smith Hall.
  • Work on Wagga’s Traver’s Street bridge has begun with the driving of test piles across the river flat north of the Murrumbidgee River.
  • An independent study commissioned by Wagga City Council found that historic Fitzmaurice Street has the attributes to re-emerge as a thriving business and cultural centre.
  • Wagga Indoor Kart Centre is open seven days a week at the Wagga Showgrounds.
  • The Sunday service at St Paul’s Anglican Church was disrupted when a church window was smashed when someone threw a large rock.

50 Years Ago

  • Miss Yvonne O’Connor presented proceeds of her dancing school’s concert to President of the Wagga and District Spastic Centre Council, Mr Max Pontifex.
  • A beautiful Dalkeith Avenue home is advertised for $18,000 and a triple fronted red brick veneer in a quiet Mt Austin-Tolland street for $15,700. Both with 80% Building Society funding available.
  • Some officials of the Wagga Beach Lifesaving Club believe that the poor condition of Wagga beach is forcing river goers to travel to unpatrolled beaches such as Oura and Kohlhagen’s beaches.
  • The Wagga branch of the Australian Labour Party will ask the next Regional and State conference of the party to reorganise the present system of water disbursement to better assist farmers.
  • RSL Club President, Stan Sadleir announced that the club would spend $250,000 on alterations and additions over the next three years.
  • Edmondson’s is selling number 10 chickens for $1.50, one pound of Weston’s family assorted Biscuits for 23 cents and tins of IXL Melon and Lemon jam also for 23 cents.
  • Bruce Tutty has been selected to represent NSW at the National Pistol Shooting Championships.
  • Fosseys are completely rebuilding their store on the corner of Fitzmaurice and Johnston Streets.
  • Prices were depressed when the W J Lenehan Pastoral Company dispersed its Romney Marsh sheep stud. Top price for ewes was $8 and for rams only $37.
  • The Jack Smith Memorial Shield was won this year at the RSL Bowling Club by an RSL team skippered by club president Percy Price.
  • Wagga Ambulance Younger Set are working hard to raise money to equip the new Ambulance crash wagon.
