25 Years Ago

  • Chamber of Commerce president Michael Wynne said that a return to pre-recession confidence by shoppers had led to good pre-Christmastrading by local stores.
  • Post-Christmas shoppers also exceeded the “highest of expectations”.
  • The Meteorological Office recorded Wagga’s coldest ever Boxing Day when the mercury peaked at 17.1 degrees.
  • There were ten road accident fatalities in the Wagga City Council area in 1993 which is four more than in 1992.
  • The Golden Grill Restaurant is now open at the Wagga RSL Club.
  • Overseas entrants have given the 47th Australian National Model Aircraft Championships an international flavour.
  • The annual large crowd gathered around Romano’s Hotel on Christmas Eve celebrating the Christmas countdown.
  • Rob Yates who has retired after 12 years as chairman of Southern Riverina Electricity and Water was farewelled by currentchairman, Bob Osborne.
  • Cr Joe Mason-Cox called for urgent repairs to the Hampden Bridge walkway “before tragedy strikes”.
  • Jenny Sanbrook and Amanda Russell from Mount Austin High School were both awarded Wagga RSL prizes for citizenship.
  • McEwan’s are advertising a Last Chance Sell-out Sale with up to 50% off normal prices.
  • A potential disaster was averted by Turvey Park Fire Brigade Officers after a council truck backed into a gas pipe behind Grannie Stiches outside the Australian Arcade.

50 Years Ago

  • Wagga’s first baby for 1969, Margaret Yvonne Holden was born at Calvary Hospital while first born at Wagga Base Hospital was Peter James Whitty.
  • More than 3000 people attended the Smith Family Mardi Gras said Smith Family President, Mr Jack Skeers.
  • Beach patrols have begun at Wagga Beach and Ian Levy is pictured in the Daily Advertisererecting a warning sign for swimmers.
  • Acting Regional Supervisor of Agriculture in Wagga, Mr G H Simpson said Riverina and South West Slopes farmers had donated 80,915 bales of hay since 14th November for drought-stricken farmers on the South Coast.
  • RVN Channel Two compere, Miss Isobel Angel married Mr John Ireland at St Andrew’s, Presbyterian Church. Bridesmaids were Misses Margaret Rodham, Jill Chalmers, Maureen Klimpsch and Madeline Ireland and groomsmen, Fraser Ainsworth, Bruce Hedditch, Brock Thompson and Gordon Braid.
  • Leagues Club captain, Brian Lawrence is pictured in the Daily Advertisercongratulating Bill Pewtriss after he made 110 for the Victoria Junior CricketAssociation at Robertson Oval.
  • The Wagga Leagues Club is serving a three-course roast dinner on New Years Day costing members just $1.20 each.
  • Cemetery Manager Mr N J Kleine is preparing plans for Council to beautify the Chinese section of the Wagga Cemetery.
  • Mr E C “Charlie” Smith is celebrating the 21stanniversary of his appointment as Field Officer at Wagga of the NSW Soil Conservation Service.
  • Proprietors Geoff and Elaine Rose are opening the Central Wagga Auto Port on the corner of Gurwood and Trail Streets.
  • Sen. Const. Ian Mortimer and Const. Peter Yeo arrested a 16-year-old youth driving a stolen car after a high-speed chase at Kooringal.
