25 Years Ago

  • General Manager, Nancye Piercy commended Nursing Unit Manager Sr Margaret Dennis and Director, Dr Joe McGirr and their staff on the Wagga Base Hospital emergency department being awarded the Accident and Emergency Association unit of excellence.
  • The CSU 1992 limited release Cowra Chardonnay was named best varietal Chardonnay and best white wine at the prestigious Adelaide Wine Show.
  • The Australian Soldiers Chapel at Kapooka was officially opened by the chapel patron and Chief of General Staff, Lieutenant General J C Grey AO.
  • Wagga district farmers are expected to reap a harvest of more than $45 million from this year’s bumper wheat crop.
  • Wagga police believe they have made a major breakthrough in solving the recent spate of thefts with the arrest of two men aged 21 and 19 and a juvenile aged 16.
  • 1400 Wagga schoolchildren paraded through Wagga’s streets to commemorate Children’s week.

  • Wagga’s 1885 Gold Cup has been offered for sale by an antique dealer in Cheltenham, England.
  • Grace Bros $3 million renovations were opened with store manager Glenn Bruce saying it was “wonderful” that dozens of shoppers had joined in the celebrations.
  • Students at St Michael’s Regional High School gained 39 distinctions and 80 credits for the 146 students taking part in the recent Australian Maths competition.
  • Wagga City Council is selling compost bins for $24.

 

50 Years Ago

  • The Daily Advertiser is celebrating 100 years of publication.
  • Member for Wagga, Mr Wal Fife, announced that a new assembly hall would be built at Wagga High School.
  • Mr Morris Gissing was re-elected chairman of the Murrumbidgee Ambulance Service Committee with Mr A W Barrow elected as deputy chairman.
  • More than 120 people attended a dinner dance at the Kooringal Hotel-Motel organised by the Wagga Christian Brothers Women’s Auxiliary.
  • Wagga, Tumbarumba, Junee, Coolamon and Lockhart Councils have combined to form the Riverina Tourist Authority with Wagga Mayor, Ald R F Harris as President.
  • David Jones staff have a new summer uniform with shorts and Bermuda socks for the men and new lightweight skirt and blouse for the ladies.
  • Wagga Archery Club target championships were held.
  • Member for Wagga, Mr Wal Fife said that a contract had been let for two new airconditioned “Riverina Express” trains to run from 1970.
