Veranda Posts and kerbside Petrol Bowsers

Kerbside verandah posts and petrol bowsers in Wagga Wagga were restricted and discouraged by Wagga City Council from the late 1920’s. https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/142814873/15635573

By the 1950’s and 60’s most had been removed, with the obvious exception of the Union Club Hotel which was ultimately the only hotel not to loose its original verandah.

In this photo, provided by Bob Douglas,  workmen can be seen removing kerbside petrol bowsers from Douglas Body Company in Fitzmaurice Street, probably in the early 1960’s.

If you look closely you’ll see in the background that the verandah posts have already been removed from the Duke of Kent Hotel but in the far background they are still a very important feature of the Australian Hotel. The verandah was removed from the Australian Hotel in 1963 at the time of the building’s conversion to the Australian Arcade. https://www.museumriverina.com.au/collections/highlights/the-australian-hotel

CSU Regional Archives also has an interesting article about building alterations to Wagga Hotels in the 60’s and 70’s https://onrecordblog.wordpress.com/2015/08/28/pubs-we-have-known/
