25 Years Ago

·         Warren Smith and Max Shepherd conducted a two-day camp at Borambola for 50 talented young cricketers.

·         Miss Wagga, Kylie Jacobson and Community Princess Karen Ingram were welcomed back from their overseas trip at a civic reception attended by about 50 people.

·         At the reception, Councillor Mary Kidson, suggested the introduction of a similar quest for the cities young men.

·         Geoff Breust, representing Kendell Airlines presented a cheque for $5000 to Ian Dacey, treasurer of the Australian National Choral Championships.

·         Minister for Housing, Robert Webster announced that public housing tenants in Tolland will gain access to appropriate support services under the new Housing Communities Assistance Program.

·         High profile chief executive officer of Wagga Base Hospital, Nancye Piercy has gained the top job in the new Riverina Health Service.

·         CSU researchers have found a strong link between rye grass pollen and asthma attacks.

·         The Wagga Squash courts in Bardo Lane were sold at auction for $90,000.

·         Wagga Golf Club President, David Byfield presented a cheque for $700 raised at a charity golf day to Paul Smyth representing St Vincent de Paul

·         Workers from the Government Cleaning Service voted to take strike action in their fight against a State Government move to privatise the service.

·         John Rumens from the Riverina Institute of TAFE presented graduation certificates to eight trainee RAAF cooks who finalised their 18 months of instruction with a full international buffet.

·         24-hour trading recently introduced by Coles supermarket was described as “fabulous” by store manager, Garry Webster.

·         The annual 1RTB Kapooka Beating the Retreat ceremony was held in Baylis Street outside the Wagga Council Chambers.

50 Years Ago

·         Don Jones has retired after almost 25 years and Amoco have purchased Don Jones Tyre Service on the corner Baylis and Edward Street with plans to demolish the building to make way for a new service station.

·         Mayor, Alderman R J Harris suggested that North Wagga should be developed as a garden suburb and that if present circumstances continued it would “certainly develop into a slum”.

·         Mr D Kennedy and Mr R Gray from Wagga Apex Club presented a cheque for $3815 the proceeds from a recent pole sitting stunt to chairman of the Murrumbidgee Ambulance Service, Mr M Gissing.

·         The Riverina’s oldest resident, Mrs Rose Daley of Peter Street has died at the age of 103.

·         Wagga Teachers College is advertising for a night Watchman with a salary of $43.34 including shift allowances for a 30-hour week.

·         Wagga residents Mrs Cec Toy and Mr and Mrs Galva Nitschke have recently visited Wagga’s City Sister City, Nordlingen and been greeted by the towns Mayor, Dr H Kessler.

·         Second Wagga Scout Troop collected 300 dozen bottles in a fund-raising bottle drive.

·         Miss Wagga 1968, Annette McNamara was special guest speaker at the South Wagga Apex Club’s seventh annual changeover which also saw President Graham Burns handing over to Bruce Ballantyne.

·         Mr A. Grassby, State member for Murrumbidgee told the Southern NSW Zone Ambulance Conference in Wagga that regionalisation and integration of Ambulance services was inevitable.

·         Sean Connery is staring as James Bond in “You Only Live Twice” at Hoyts Wagga Drive-In.

·         The Murrumbidgee River has risen to about 21 feet and is causing minor flooding over the north Wagga flats for a few days.
