25 Years Ago

·         Last month, was Wagga’s wettest July on record with 130mm of rain being recorded.

·         Wagga’s newest restaurant, Sizzler with almost 290 seats for customers and 110 full and part-time staff has opened in Hammond Avenue.

·         Wagga police officer Terry O’Connell who developed a community-based program which has slashed youth crime has been awarded a scholarship to study juvenile justice systems in Europe.

·         Associate Professor, David Battersby announced that Charles Sturt University and Wagga Base Hospital have joined forces to establish the Riverina Rural Health Training Unit.

·         Former Wagga police inspector, Herbert Smith who retired from the NSW Police Force in 1973 and had has since had a long association with Rotary, Probus and the Senior Citizens Association as well as the Wagga City Bowling Club has died.

·         Allan Norris, President of the Wagga branch of the Small Business Association called for an end to the anachronism of a special holiday for banks each August.

·         Paul Mercurio from the movie Strictly Ballroom performed live at the Wagga Civic Theatre.

·         A former manager of the East Coast Clothing Company in Wagga was fined $1,000 in Wagga Local Court for larceny as a servant.

·         One of Australia’s leading fashion designers, Wagga’s own Richard Cook is opening a boutique in the city in a partnership with Jennifer and Peter Sumpter of O’Connor’s Formalwear.

·         Wagga’s singing nun, Sister Irene Whelan, well known for her love of AFL Club Carlton and singing has died after more than 50 years’ service with the Little Company of Mary.

·         At the club’s annual Changeover Dinner, Colin Butt succeeded John Egan as president of Wollundry Rotary Club.

·         Wagga City Mission held a “Winter Sleepout” to raise funds to support the homeless on Friday and Saturday in the K Mart car park.

·         The first intake of Navy air technicians arrived at RAAF Base Wagga to begin a 48-week course.

50 Years Ago

·         Tenders have been accepted for the construction of 26 Housing Commission cottages in Tichbourne Crescent, Immarna Place and Barinya Street.

·         Jim Stenmark’s 69 in the A grade stroke event set a course record at the Wagga Country Club. Don Paul won the B grade with 69 net and Graham Lisle the C grade with 73 net.

·         Miss Annette Bevis, a 22-year-old geography and commerce teacher at Wagga High is the sixth entrant in this year’s Miss Wagga Quest.

·         A state-wide drop of 40% in wholesale lamb and sucker prices is “very pronounced” in Wagga said Mr J Luck, manager of the Farmers and Graziers C-op Ltd.

·         Senior cadet at Wagga High School CUO Jim Vivian escorted Colonel C H A East during an inspection of 95 cadets conducting a ceremonial parade.

·         Thirteen-year-old Kerrie Woolbank from Mt Austin High presented Mrs Gadsby from the Haven with handicraft items to be sold at the Haven Fair.

·         Wagga Club Apexians, David Kennedy and Richard Gray presented a cheque for $1320 to District Manager of Gumleigh Boys Home, Mt J H Frisken.

·         The fifth annual Riverina Tenpin Bowling Championships were held at the Wagga Bowl.

·         Staff from Wagga branches of the Bank of NSW spent the Bank Holiday Monday golfing at the Wagga Country Club.

·         Canberra’s over-crowded airspace has forced RAAF to move an Iroquois helicopter training group to Wagga.

·         The ten-day Miss Wagga festival will be known in future as the “Girraween Festival” said Festival Committee Chairman, Peter Rocks.
