Linda McGill opens Wagga Leagues Club extensions in 1968

Fifty years ago former Olympian, Commonwealth Games medallist and the first Australian to swim the English Channel Linda McGill opened new $25,000 extensions, including a sauna bath and gymnasium at the Wagga Leagues Club.

In 1964, at age 29, McGill set a record for the fastest and only swim around Hong Kong Island which stood for over 40 years. The following year she became the first Australian to swim the English channel missing the then women’s world record by just 11 minutes. In 1967 she repeated the swim and beat the record with a time of just under 10 hours.
