Dixieland was nestled under the willow trees on the river bank at the end of Little Gurwood Street (now Sturt Street), diagonally opposite the police station.
It was first constructed as a floating dance floor in the early 1920s but after being washed away by floods the Wagga Brass Band volunteers mounted a more permanent structure on brick piers.
