- 19-year-old rising triathlon star, Luke Kahlefeldt has been invited to take part in the nationally televised Grand Prix series, with round one beginning this week in Adelaide.
- Members of the Krohn family took a cruise down the river with Murrumbidgee Eco Experience as part of the celebrations for John and Aileen Krohn’s 50th wedding anniversary.
- More than 60 students from throughout New South Wales and interstate are attending this year’s Riverina Summer School for Strings.
- Preliminary training nurses from Wagga about twenty years ago attended a reunion this week in Wagga.
- Sports medicos from across Australia are attending the Leuko National Sports Trainers Camp at Charles Sturt University.
- Talented young tennis players, Jessica Smith and Evan Marceau are among only 120 players selected to attend the weeklong live-in, Commonwealth Bank Junior Tennis Coaching Camp starting this week at the New South Wales Academy of Sport at Narrabeen.
- Emblem Park, near Calvary Hospital is being studied by the CSIRO to identify sources of groundwater recharge as part of a bigger project on salinity in the area.
- Barry Longmore finishes this week after 43 years working with the Department of Lands.
- Retailers, Centre management and police met to discuss a recent spate of robberies and vandalism at Kooringal Mall.
- Member for Wagga, Joe Schipp said it was not surprising that the AFL had rejected Wagga for any pre-season fixtures as facilities in Wagga were not up to scratch, in comparison to other country centres such as Griffith and Lavington which were attracting AFL pre-season and trial matches.
- Wagga media and marketing manager, Peter McAlister has been appointed campaign director for the National Party’s bid to win the State seat of Wagga with candidate, Jim Booth.
- Labour Party hopeful for the seat of Wagga, Col McPherson has applauded the Carr Government initiative announcing funding of more than $1.4 million to purchase homes, five of which would be in Wagga, for transfer to the South-West Community Housing Association.
- Two Wagga Girl Guides, Melisa Graham and Laura Granger have been selected to represent New South Wales at a national youth forum in Sydney convened by Guides Australia.
- The fifth annual Great Canoe Race organised by Scouts Australia has attracted a record number of entries and starts this week in Gundagai.
50 Years Ago
- More than 480 people crammed the Wagga Civic Theatre to welcome the Prime Minister and his wife Margaret to Wagga to open the Schnelle Harmon grandstand at the Eric Weisell Oval and the half million-dollar extensions to the Wagga Leagues Club.
- Lindsay Hicks, Bill Arthur, Norm Brown, Roger Allen, George Elder, Phil Croaker, Wes Campbell, and Norm Mowsar successfully completed the Management Certificate course at the Wagga Technical College.
- Leonard Holdings, muffler manufacturers, who are decentralising to Wagga have begun moving principal machinery to its Dobney Avenue premises.
- Jim Pratley is pictured in the Daily Advertiser sweeping to square leg to notch another four for the Australian Old Collegians Patrons XI team in a cricket match against the touring Canadian team at Robertson Oval.
- A new family fee system for Catholic primary schools was introduced at a meeting called by the Bishop of Wagga, Dr F P Carroll in Wagga and attended by diocesan priests, religious and lay people representing every parish and school board in the diocese.
- Huthwaites are selling Robin Gro-Shu school shoes for $11.50 with free taxation cards available with all school wear purchases.
- Wagga’s Commerce Permanent Building Society is offering a savings account with 7.5% pa interest.
- Mr Pat Kain, secretary of Radio Cabs Wagga Ltd announced that taxi rates have been increased with a mileage rate increasing from 24 to 30 cents and the minimum fare increasing from 40 to 50 cents. A new surcharge will also apply for radio service.
- December rainfall figures in the Riverina and Southwest Slopes were well above average with Wagga recording 365 points compared to the monthly average of 149 points.
- The new Commanding Officer for the Kapooka Army Base is Military Cross winner Colonel R D F Lloyd, OBE who is replacing Colonel Peter Norton.
- Wagga Court of Petty Sessions sat for a total of 621 hours and 30 minutes last year and heard 3927 charge and summons cases which was almost 600 less than in 1972.
- Wagga girls Robyn Gaye, Ruth Blake and Heather Salzke recently played in the New South Wales Primary School softball team competing against Queensland and South Australia with Robyn named as the outstanding performer in the team.
- Wagga swimmers, Vicki Howarth, Anne Tunley, Oddbjorn Ludvigsen, Julian Slater, Lorene Farrah, Suzanne Baumer broke nine records between them at the recent inter-district carnival held in Griffith.
- Wagga Rugby League promotions officer, Graham Kennedy is investigating the organisation of a Saturday afternoon “social” competition in Wagga.
