25 Years Ago

  • Kendell Airlines, already Australia’s largest regional airline, announced that it will be doubling its size with a $300 million investment and at least 20 new jobs in Wagga.
  • The Riverina Anglican College will open in Wagga in 1999 under the helm of foundation principal, Doctor Ian Grant.
  • Well known, Wagga pharmacist, Lindsay Alfred Hamill, of Wollundry Avenue died after a long battle with leukaemia at the age of 53.
  • Glenys Armstrong was the official starter for more than 1,000 runners taking part in Sunday’s City to Lake Run.
  • Great Southern Energy, regional asset manager, Hany Hanna, announced that concern about potential gas leaks had sparked a city-wide program to identify and replace 5000 faulty natural gas regulators.
  • Ian Walsh and Mick and Alice Mullins celebrated their inclusion into the honour roll of life members at the Wagga Harness Racing Club.
  • Mount Austin High School Junior Choir and their choir director, Joanne Searson, won the R G Tayles Memorial Trophy at the Wagga Eisteddfod for the seventh consecutive year.
  • Tony Hare celebrated 20 years of service with the NSW Ambulance Service in the Riverina.
  • Garry O’Brien from Narrandera showed off his 1958 Goggomobile during the Wagga Veteran and Vintage Motor Club’s media day.
  • Wagga School of Arts is presenting “Murder at the Music Hall” at the Firenze Italian Restaurant in Johnston Street.
  • Adam Turk, James Dolan, Issac James, and James Beecroft were among hundreds of students who attended the Rotary Careers Day at the Kyeamba Smith Hall.
  • Fay Heeney and Pam D’Anvers were among 2000 people who attended the South Wagga Rotary Club’s 18th Annual Antique Fair held over three days at the Kyeamba Smith Hall.
  • Agnes May Mitchell, affectionately known by many as “May” died in Calvary Hospital at the age of 87.
  • Wagga and District Bowling Association chairman of the umpires, Ross Allen, is hosting a workshop at the RSL Club.
  • Partner and business law specialist, Charles Houen, announced that Creaghe Lisle solicitors have opened a new office at Tumut in addition to their existing offices in Wagga, Temora, and Lockhart.
  • Wiradjuri elders Isobel Reid and Lena Whyman launched the two-week-long Carnivale Festival at the opening of an Inter-cultural Art Exhibition at the Fitzmaurice Street offices of the Eastern Riverina Arts Program.
  • Quota International celebrated 40 years of service to the Wagga community with a luncheon at the Commercial Club.

50 Years Ago

  • Pam Jessup and Pat Bell-Chambers have been awarded life membership of the Wagga Women’s Hockey Association.
  • Cheryl Moore has been crowned as Miss Rugby League for 1973 by Mrs Kit Dixon, wife of Group 9 patron and Wagga Leagues Club President, Mr Arthur Dixon.
  • 4000 primary school children from Wagga and surrounding areas, took part in the annual P.S.S.A. Athletics Carnival held at Gissing Oval.
  • Since opening for business in January this year, Peter McCoullough and his team have sold more than $3 million dollars worth of Real Estate in and around Wagga.
  • More than 180 people attended a Mass celebrated in Wagga at the Home of Compassion by the Bishop of Wagga Dr F P Carroll to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Sister Mary Barbara’s entry to the religious profession.
  • John Aveyard has been appointed as Officer-in-charge of the Wagga Soil Conservation Research Station.
  • 2WG personalities including John Evans, Richard Perno, Barry Hayden, and David Clark raced around Wagga on self-propelled lawnmowers.
  • Mates are advertising SPC canned fruit 29oz for 29 cents, Kinkara Premium Blend Tea, 1Ib for 57 cents and Courage Beer 26oz bottles for $5.20 a dozen.
  • Discount Meats in the Australian Arcade are advertising Topside Steak, 10lb for $9.50, Lamb Loin Chops 10lb for $7.90 and Diced Beef, 10lb for $7.60.
  • Wallpaper Specialists, Eric Paull Furnishings, in Baylis Street are advertising over 1,000 rolls of Ready Pasted Wallpapers in stock.
  • Mr Jim Dominguez and his wife, Grace celebrated their Ruby Wedding Anniversary with a party held by their sons, Peter and Tony, their wives and 20 grandchildren.
  • South Wagga Apex president, John Mueller, presented the winners shield to Wagga Apex president, Frank Fountain after Wagga Apex won the annual Regional Apex Sporting challenge held at Gundagai.
  • Thousands of fans from throughout the Riverina crammed into football grounds on the weekend paying a total of $8562 to watch three Rugby League and four Australian Rules finals.
  • Wagga City Council has approached thirty-six towns and municipalities throughout the State in a move to organise a seminar in Sydney on decentralisation.
  • Woolworths Homemakers Discount Store has opened in Baylis Street.
  • More than 300 people attended hair styling competitions held at St. John’s Hall.
  • Twenty-six Riverina Post Offices are included in a departmental survey looking into the viability of the State’s postal services with some possibly facing downgrading.
