25 Years Ago

  • Golden Gown Committee members, Mary McNickle and Nancy Finch received life membership awards recognising their 25 years of service to the committee.
  • Trinity Senior High School aerobics team, Emma Tester, Jo Peters, and Chantal Plum won the NSW Country-Riverina Championships held at Albury and will now contest the Australian Aerobic Championships in Melbourne later this year.
  • Heather Baker was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship by Wagga Rotary Club recognising her tireless volunteer work for the Wagga Branch of Riding for the Disabled.
  • 600 people took part in the “Global March for Jesus” hosted by the Wagga Inter-Church Council in Baylis Street and the Victory Memorial Gardens.
  • Profinance manager, John Norman and chief executive officer, John de la Torre are pictured in the Daily Advertiser with an award recognising Profinance as one of the top 500 businesses in NSW.
  • A team from St Michael’s High School came second in the recent NSW Combined Catholic Colleges State Hockey Championships.
  • Rinehart’s House of Fashion in Baylis Street is advertising new winter fashions including green spot specials with up to 50% off.
  • Family and friends organised a surprise 80th birthday party for Edith Williams at the Wagga Astor Inn.
  • Wagga Junior Rugby League presented new sporting equipment to the Police and Community Youth Club (PCYC)
  • Wagga Meat Market is selling corned silverside for $3.99 kg and marinated chicken kebabs for 85 cents each with Duffy Bros Fruit and Veg selling cabbages and lettuces for 99 cents each.
  • Member for Riverina, Noel Hicks is presenting petitions from Riverina residents to Federal Parliament calling for radiotherapy services to be established in Wagga and Albury.
  • The Greater Murray Health Service has released a strategic plan for the development of aged care services in the Riverina.
  • Wagga is set to become the first Crime Stoppers city in country New South Wales with the River to Rail Committee backing the crime prevention initiative which will be launched in the city this week.
  • Elder’s agent Bob Wheeler and Wesfarmers Dalgety agent, Des Hamilton each have several quality farming properties listed close to Wagga including “Rowan”, “Koolpinyah”, and “Corella”.
  • Two Wagga homes in Fox Street and Flinders Street were sold at auction for $150,000 and $105,000 respectively while eight other properties were passed in.

50 Years Ago

  • Patricia Stephenson, previously Deputy-Matron at Tamworth Base Hospital has taken up the position as the Chief of Nursing Staff at Wagga Base Hospital replacing Miss J Potter who has taken up an executive post with a nurse training hospital in Vietnam.
  • The Women’s Auxiliary of the Wagga District Ambulance presented a new two-way radio valued at $750 to the Wagga Ambulance.
  • Three sets of sisters, Joan and Kathie McGilvray, Vicki and Robyn Marks, and Vicki Lawson and Lorraine Bell-Chambers have been selected in the Riverina Women’s Hockey teams competing this week in the country championships at Taree.
  • G J Fitzpatrick in Gurwood Street is advertising new land releases at Eastlake ($4000), Ashmont (from $3750), Lakeside (from $4500) and Kooringal (from $4100).
  • More than 300 bowlers from throughout the Riverina raised $1510 during their 13th annual tournament held in support of the Police and Citizens Boys Club.
  • Wagga Little Athletics Association recently won the Country Championship Shield at a carnival held in Sydney.
  • Local and visiting civil defence members attended a dinner at the Wagga Commercial Club prior to the annual Murrumbidgee Regional Conference of State Emergency Services.
  • Wagga’s Penguin Club and Wagga Rostrum Club held a combined dinner at the Allonville Motel.
  • Over 100 old vehicles from 12 Riverina Vintage and Veteran Motor Clubs are taking part in the sixth annual rally of the Wagga Vintage and Veteran Motor Club.
  • At a con-celebrated Mass, the Bishop of Wagga Dr F P Carroll presented a special Apostolic Blessing sent by Pope Paul to Brother Joseph Felix O’Connor from Wagga’s Christian Brothers High School who is celebrating his Golden Jubilee as a Brother.
  • Ald. H D Frisby was re-elected as secretary of the Australian Local Government Women’s Association.
  • Despite an announcement last week that men’s haircuts in NSW would increase by 30 cents, most Wagga barbers have retained their basic price of $1.20.
  • Their son, Paul Galloway and his wife gave Mr and Mrs A Galloway a surprise farewell party prior to their leaving on a trip to Africa, Canada, England, and Scotland.
  • Four juveniles were arrested by Wagga police and charged with more than 40 offences including car stealing over the past two weeks.
  • Thirty-six Wagga and district girls made their debut at the annual Masonic Ball.
  • The Sturt Public School’s Parents and Citizens Association are preparing for the school’s opening following the arrival of the new principal, Mr N Collison.
  • Wagga City Council rejected a request by Hoyts Country Theatres to show commercial films in the Wagga Civic Theatre on some weeknights.
