25 Years Ago

  • Molly Siegel, Ailsa Parsons, Lou Karas, Bob Mitchell, and Maureen Flower were all presented with Premiers Awards by Member for Wagga, Joe Schipp during the launch of Seniors Week.
  • Angry North Wagga residents are protesting the planned road closure between Bomen Road and Coolamon Road.
  • A Wagga City Council committee’s decision not to participate in a proposed series of Statewide crime meetings was slammed by Member for Wagga, Joe Schipp.
  • Handwritten letters of apology were sent to six Wagga Doctors by their former bookkeeper after she gambled away almost half a million dollars of their money.
  • Pat’s Tyres and the Daily Advertiser invited everyone with the Christian name, Patrick to the 2nd Annual Patrick Happy Hour with free beer to celebrate St Patrick’s Day at the Bridge Tavern from 5 pm to 6 pm.
  • Forrest Centre board chairman Harry Hendriks and Sister Brigid Gleeson of the Little Company of Mary officially opened extensions to the Mary Potter Nursing Home.
  • South Wagga Public School teacher, Sue Brown is celebrating her 25 years at the school.
  • Lions Club of Wagga vice president, Jim Olsen said that the declining popularity of clubs such as Lions, Rotary and Apex was a disturbing trend.
  • Wagga Shakespeare Club has been meeting for 100 years and current members, Trixie Read, Joyce Holmes and Vi Davoren, who have 90 years of membership of the Club between them, are pictured in the Daily Advertiser.
  • The Wagga Marketplace celebrated its first year of trading with entertainment provided by Darren Coggan and a ceremony attended by Centre Manager, Steve Atkinson, Wagga Mayor, John Harding, Member for Wagga, Joe Schipp and marketing manager, Sandra Johnstone.
  • Detective Inspector Ross Lawson warned that counterfeit $50 notes have been passed in the Wagga area.
  • Six Wagga students, Liz McWilliam, Samantha Cox, Jessica Hancock, Blair Earl, Jane Meyer, and Cecilia Judge were among 600 students attending a large two-day World Vision convention in the Blue Mountains.

50 Years Ago

  • Managing Director, Mr Phillip McLaren is pictured in the Daily Advertiser surveying new work at the Murray Cod Hatchery in Wagga which will double its present capacity.
  • More than 150 people attended a wreath-laying ceremony at the Wagga Memorial Gardens as part of a reunion of the 21st Light Horse Regiment.
  • Wagga and Albury both increased their populations between 1966 and 1971 with Wagga recording an increase of 3055 people to 28,905 and Albury an increase of 3308 people to 28420.
  • Mrs Pam Harper is pictured in the Daily Advertiser modelling a short-sleeved autumn frock at a pool-side fashion parade at the home of Mrs J Bartholomew in aid of the Wagga Caledonian Society.
  • Two Kooringal Public School students, Sally Meech and David French won four medals at a Little Athletics meet in Sydney.
  • Publicity Officer, Bruce Hedditch is encouraging membership of the Liberal Party with interested persons asked to contact Liberal Party Wagga President, Henry Gissing or Wagga Women’s President, Mrs Betty Kelynack.
  • An eighteen-year-old Wagga Agricultural College student died when the motorcycle on which he was a pillion passenger hit a tree on Hampden Avenue.
  • More than 120 Masons attended the 25th installation of Lodge Wagga Unity at the Masonic Temple in Tarcutta Street with Worshipful Brother R S McKenzie installing his successor Brother W E Thompson.
  • Lynne Everson and David Wunsch who were married recently at the Wesley Methodist Church are pictured in the Daily Advertiser.
  • Known for almost twenty years as Owen Finch Car Radio the business was purchased last year by Mike McColl and Geoff Maurer who have renamed it as the Wagga Car Radio and Hi-Fi Centre and moved to the centre of the main street at 238 Baylis Street.
  • Mrs Ellen Hardiman celebrated her 90th birthday at the C.W.A. rooms with over 100 guests some of whom had travelled from New Zealand, Sydney, Gilgandra, and Deniliquin.
  • The RAAF Central Band gave a concert in the Plaza Theatre and led a RAAF march through the city the following morning.
  • Wagga entrants in the Lovely Motherhood Quest for 1973 are facing their regional judging at the City Council Chambers.
  • Ron Langridge has been appointed as the new car sales manager at Wagga Motors.
  • Wagga swimmer, Kerry Johnston, qualified for three finals at the Shell Age State finals in Sydney.
  • Edmondsons in Bourke Street on the corner of Bourke and Urana Streets are selling 12-piece coffee sets for $4.95, bath towels for $2.25, and twin bar Hecla heaters for $5.95.
