25 Years Ago

  • Janene Manwaring was crowned as Miss Wagga 1997 and Katherine Cattell as Community Princess in a glittering ceremony compered by Miss Wagga 1969, Dawn Dixon (nee Lowe) in the Victory Memorial Gardens.
  • Popular Wagga publican, Peter Bolton, died at Calvary Hospital after a three-month battle with cancer.
  • Chief executive officer, Michael Moodie said that the new office of the Greater Murray Health Service will be located at 73-75 Johnston Street.
  • Seven Wagga Women’s Refuge workers sacked with 30 minutes notice last month were reinstated.
  • Two businesses, operating for more than 30 years, Shirley Cooper Fashion and Bridal in Baylis Street and Lakner’s Hair Fashion Studio in Fitzmaurice Street are closing soon.
  • Slim Dusty performed at a private function at the Wagga Showground after attending the truck drivers Memorial Day service at Tarcutta earlier in the day.
  • Andrew Harrison won the Festival of Wagga Modified Production Sedan Cup at the Wagga International Raceway.
  • A Wagga Teachers College class of 1955 and 1956 was held at the Charles Sturt University Winery.
  • Arthur and Patricia Colley celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary at Sizzler’s Steakhouse.
  • 15-year-old Tim Flint caught a 4.25kg carp at the Carp Fisherama organised by South Wagga Apex Club at the Wollundry Lagoon.
  • Timothy Porter, one of five surgeons who signed a letter to the Daily Advertiser has called for funds to be redistributed from Albury Base Hospital to Wagga Base Hospital to curtail ballooning surgical waiting lists.
  • Graeme Buchan has completed a bicycle ride of almost 3,000 kilometres across the Nullarbor Plain in 28 days.

  • Riverina Co-op is relocating from Baylis Street to new premises in Moorong Street.

50 Years Ago

  • The Governor-General, Sir Paul Hasluck presented the Queens Colour to the RAAF School of Technical Training at a ceremony to celebrate its 25 years of service.
  • Police Superintendent, Mr R A B Allen is pictured in the Daily Advertiser discussing new Honda 750 four-cylinder bikes now stationed in Wagga with Constable Loneragan, Senior Constable Kitson and Sergeant Robinson.
  • Chairman of the Wagga Chamber of Commerce, Mr R Hartwig, is calling a special meeting to discuss shopping hours in Wagga after five Riverina Chambers expressed strong opposition to late night shopping and Saturday morning trading.
  • Diane Langdon who has just completed a 12-month course at the Wagga Technical College has eclipsed more than 8000 other girls to be selected as Australia’s top typist.
  • A $750,000 road project has been opened at Guy’s Hill cutting several minutes off the travelling time between Wagga and the Hume Highway.
  • Bus proprietor, Harold Fearne claimed that pupils were deliberately “missing” buses to avoid early arrival at school.
  • Council employees, Graeme Wenzke and Jack Goodrum are pictured in the Daily Advertiser removing an old tree which had fallen into Wollundry Lagoon.
  • Mr and Mrs Felix Siebels helped their son, Ray to celebrate his 21st birthday at the Lutheran Hall.

  • Mike O’Neill has been elected president of Wagga Jaycees with vice-presidents, Kevin Lane and Richard Dobie and secretary, Ted Dickenson.
  • 100 guests including Mrs P Versteeg, Mrs P Davis and Mrs T Craig attended a pool-side party at the home of Mrs G T Knight of Red Hill Road to raise funds for the St Mary’s School Auxiliary Fund.
  • Mr W Fife, Minister for Mines, officially “launched” new remodelled showrooms for Wallis Marine.
  • The Home of Compassion charity golf day was held at the Wagga City Golf Club.
  • M S McLeod’s tyre service in Dobney Avenue is celebrating ten successful years in Wagga.
  • Bowlers, Col Oliver, Don Fraser, Fred Freebody and Herb Belling were among 88 players who took part in the first Ken Fraser Memorial Scholarship Tournament at Lockhart.
  • Woolworth’s Family Centre are selling No 5 chickens for $1.02, Cottee’s soft drink cans, four for 32 cents and BBQ sausages 1 lb for 26 cents.
