25 Years Ago

  • Mayor, Peter Dale welcomed a report from the Department of Local Government which showed that Wagga City Council charges the cheapest general fund rates in its category and has a quick turnaround for building and development applications.
  • A freak asthma epidemic caused by high pollen counts and wet stormy weather saw more than 60 people attending Wagga Base Hospital for emergency treatment, forcing staff into a crisis situation.
  • Wagga man, Hewitt Whyman has been re-elected to the Binaal Billa Regional Council in the recent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) elections.
  • A $5000 Scholarship to assist junior Legatees to study at Charles Sturt University was launched by Don Paul from Wagga Legacy, Kapooka Commandant, David Buchanan and CSU pro vice-chancellor, Kath Bowmer.
  • Representatives of the inland forum representing local councils and local parliamentary representatives from Wagga, Tamworth and Dubbo met in Wagga to discuss issues of concern.
  • The Maureen Flower School of Entertainment celebrated its 20th anniversary with a variety concert at the Civic Theatre.
  • O’Brien’s Wagga Hot Bake in Morgan Street is advertising Wednesday meal deals for CBD office workers which includes a sandwich or pie with a cappuccino or hot chocolate and a cake of choice for just $2.
  • Fifty people including Riverina representative of the Foster Parents Association, Lorraine Heeney, attended a workshop in Wagga for people involved in fostering children.
  • Highly respected winemaker, Wolf Blass will be awarded an honorary doctorate this week by Charles Sturt University in recognition of his role in the development of the Australian wine industry.
  • Councillor Chris Miller said that Wagga City Council had received “virtually diddly squat” in submissions on its main street project but he believed that it was on track.
  • State Librarian, Dagmar Schmidmaier was welcomed at a civic reception by Mayor Peter Dale and chairwoman of the Riverina Library Service, Mary Kidson.
  • Australian of the Year, Dr John Yu, is the guest speaker at the first, Greater Murray Health Service, annual general meeting this week.
  • St Michael’s under 14 rugby league side managed by David Hill and coached by Dave Lewis won the Cochrane Cup recently.
  • The Clef, Retravision in the Riverina Plaza is advertising PlayStation games from $79 including a free game hire from Civic Video.
  • The 1996 Rotary Group Study Exchange team led by Bruce Gruber were welcomed back after their trip to Brazil.

50 Years Ago

  • Pianist, Winifred Atwell, is playing this week at the Civic Theatre and made a personal appearance at Edmondson’s where she personally autographed all records purchased.
  • Council, industrial promotion officer, Joe MacManamon has resigned to take up a similar position in Armidale.
  • Barney Rooke, trap location winner of the Winchester Tournament held at the Wagga Gun Club was congratulated by Wagga’s Mayor, Ald M H Gissing.
  • John Rooke, son of Wagga’s clay shooting champion, Barney Rooke, won the Deepwater Members Trophy at the opening power boat regatta held by Wagga Boat Club at Lake Albert.
  • Sunday masses were celebrated in St Joseph’s Hall as extensive renovations were undertaken at St Michael’s Cathedral.
  • Wal and Baden Breust won the Wagga and District Car Club’s 300-mile Springtime Trial.
  • Mr Maurice Hale is leaving Wagga after ending an eleven-year term as Teacher’s College principal.
  • Champion eight-year-old sprinter, Johnny Holzberger, received his NSW Primary Schools’ Sports Association gold badge from Education Department Sports Director, John Brasier.
  • The Mayor, Ald M H Gissing welcomed Mr and Mrs Homer Davis who are visiting Wagga from Wagga’s sister city, Leavenworth in the United States.
  • Natalie Kerr, Elizabeth Anderson, Carolyn Davis, Wendy Mohr, Carol Veliscek and Barbara Trajkovic from Kooringal Primary School competed in the Riverina team at the NSW Primary Schools’ athletic carnival in Sydney.
  • Wagga’s, Bruce Tutty, won the NSW Amateur Pistol Association Riverina Zone Shoot held at Coleambally Pistol Club.
  • Ray Russell, secretary of the Wagga Greyhound Club for the past five and a half years is retiring.
  • The Master Builders’ Association annual golf day was held in conjunction with its Field Day.
  • A tug o’ war, supported by many business houses was a feature of the Police and Citizen’s Boy’s Club Fete held at the Eric Weissel Oval.
  • Fosseys are selling Toddler’s Frocks for 89 cents, Singlet Tops for $1.40 and Towelling Scuffs for $1.39.
