25 Years Ago

  • Two former Wagga players, Paul Kelly and Wayne Carey have been named captain and vice-captain of the AFL All Australian Team.
  • Well known Riverina historian, Dr Keith Swan has died aged 79 years.
  • Michael Moodie has taken over as chief executive officer of the new Greater Murray Health Service.
  • Councillor Jim Eldridge claimed that the budget for the Wagga City Council Civic Centre had already blown out by $7 million and that the eventual cost would be $10 million more than planned, a claim which was quickly attacked by the Mayor, Peter Dale.
  • Kath Curnow from the Department of Community Services and manager of the Kurrajong Early Intervention Centre, Sue Davies are heading up a committee to improve services for young children with developmental delays and disabilities.
  • Council received a petition from 32 businesses expressing concern at the number of mobile food vans operating in industrial areas following the restriction of mobile food vans in the central business district.
  • NSW APF general manager Craig Davis congratulated North Wagga under 10 player, Jed Stockton, and Wagga Tigers under 12 Jeremy Rowe for winning best and fairest awards in their respective leagues.
  • Bruce Piercy, general manager of the Wagga Leagues Club announced a nett operating profit for the club of $101,576 for the last financial compared to $257,187 in the previous year.
  • New promoters, Lindsay Swann and John Irvin said that the Wagga International Raceway was set for the best year in its chequered history.
  • Lisa Reed is leading the Wagga Golf women’s club championships by 16 shots after the first round.
  • Thersa Hillier, Bianca Messina, Maud Wilson, Helen Abigal and Tom Wilson were among those at the Leagues Club celebrating National Meals on Wheels Day with a “Wheels to Meals at the Leagues” luncheon.
  • Greg McDermott, Ian McLellan, Grant McCarthy, Joy McLellan, Andrew Bloomfield, and Graham Power received individual awards for last season in the Southern Districts Racing Association.
  • Timber workers at Laminex Industries walked off the job claiming that recent staffing cuts had compromised safety standards.

50 Years Ago

  • Mayor Ald Morris Gissing paid tribute to the service of Aldermen, Brunskill, Toy, French and Mrs Geoghegan who are not seeking re-election and attended their last council meeting this week.
  • Former Bishop of Wagga, the late Dr F A Henschke, who died in 1968 was finally laid to rest in a special crypt in St Michaels Cathedral.
  • Wagga Legacy Appeal week raised about $5,000 slightly more than last year.
  • That “Old Man Emu Fella”, Johnny Williamson is appearing in person at the Wagga Leagues Club this Saturday night.
  • In his annual report Mayor, Ald Morris Gissing said that more than $6 million was spent on new buildings in Wagga in the last financial year including more than $1 million for State Government buildings.
  • The Wagga Mazda Centre opened in Baylis street with Ray Parr as its manager.
  • Barry Harg celebrated his 21st Birthday at the Windmill restaurant in Gurwood Street which is owned by his family.
  • Matron E White of the Wagga Base Hospital was guest speaker at the recent 47th birthday of the Wagga CWA.
  • Wagga stock agents were forced to use nearly every cattle yard in addition to sheep yards at the saleyards to handle a large sale of 49,500 sheep.
  • Victoria Brown was crowned as Miss South-West in a glittering spectacle at the Spastic Council Ball at the Leagues Club.
  • Miss Madelyn Ireland and Mr Jim Harrison celebrated the announcement of their engagement with a party held at the home of Madelyn’s parents, “Claybraes” in Vincent Road.
  • Huthwaites net profit fell by more than $28,000 to $93,548 last financial year.
  • The Wagga Junior Pigeon Club show was an outstanding success with a total of 113 exhibits from 15 club members.
  • Top Wagga junior hockey players, Jenny Marks and Kaye McMasters have been selected to attend a coaching clinic at Canberra, sponsored by Rothmans.
  • Complete bowlers’ outfits in regulation styles are being advertised as available from Huthwaites.
