25 Years Ago

  • Yvonne Braid who started at Radio 2WG as a 17-year-old, 38 years ago has been appointed to the position of 2WG station manager.
  • A crowd of about 300 attended the official opening by Cardinal Edward Cassidy of Cassidy House at Vianney College.
  • Councillor Kay Hull called for a substantial hike in the fines for illegal dumping of rubbish.
  • Transport company, Finemore Holdings Ltd has lifted its annual net profit by 6.3% despite difficult economic conditions.
  • Dr Margaret Sheldon is the guest speaker at this month’s Women in Business lunch.
  • Jenny Newbound, Barbara Johnston, Andy Byrne, Fred Leggett and Graham and Shane Astridge are among residents concerned with plans for the Old Narrandera Road exit from the Gobba Bridge which is currently under construction.
  • Senior Constable Todd Sweeney was among nineteen police officers receiving a “Crop-a-Cop” head-shave which raised $20,000 for cancer and leukaemia research at Wagga Leagues Club.
  • Popular Mount Austin High School industrial arts teacher, Doug Clancy, 41, died in Wagga Base Hospital after a short illness.
  • Father Jordan Perry was guest of honour at the seventh annual Di Maginness, Art of Speech Competition.
  • Piano accordionists, Joyce Allen and Hazel Price entertained residents attending the Wendy Hucker Nursing Home 25 anniversary celebrations.
  • 31 members of the Irish Schoolboys Rugby Union touring party are in Wagga this week.
  • Regional judging of the National History Challenge attracted more than 40 entrants who were judged by Jack Mullins, from Wagga RSL sub-branch, Jeff Nye from Wagga Public School and Jenny Passett from Wagga Technology High School.
  • Stuart’s Kooringal Store are selling smoked ham for $9.99 kg, Schweppes 1250ml varieties for 89 cents end and Sunicrust Big Slice White Hi Fibre bread for $1.49 each.

50 Years Ago

  • Lamson Paragon have awarded a $1 million building contract to Buckman Building Group to establish their factory complex on six acres of Wagga City Council’s industrial estate in Hammond Avenue.
  • Wagga Boat Club has objected to Wagga City Council allowing paddle boats to be operated on Lake Albert.
  • Mrs M Baker and Mrs H Urquhart representing the Edel Quinn Shelter accepted a cheque for $140 from Mrs Yvonne Vernon and Mrs June Vincent representing Wagga Quota Club which will be used to provide floor covering in the shelter’s dining room.
  • Wagga Licencing Court approved the transfer of the Tooth and Company liquor licence from the present depot in The Esplanade to a new depot in Lake Road.
  • NSW Valuer-General, Mr H W Eastwood was in Wagga to meet with Member for Sturt, Tim Fischer and Mitchell Shire President, Cr. L H McKelvie.
  • The Wagga Drama Festival continues this week in the Civic Theatre.
  • Mrs Wise, a member for 24 years was presented with life membership of the St. Aidan’s Presbyterian Women’s Association.
  • The Wagga Crafts Guild is holding its annual exhibition at the Wollundry Gallery in Tarcutta Street.
  • The Wagga Senior Citizens Association has asked Wagga City Council to move the Senior Citizens Centre from the Smith Family Centre to near the Wollundry Art Gallery building in Tarcutta Street.
  • More than 300 ex-students attended the Wagga High School Ex-students Association Blue and White Ball held at the Wagga Police Boys Club.
  • Mr and Mrs Jim Birch were pictured in the Daily Advertiser with their son, Peter, and Sandra Redman at Peter’s 21st birthday party.
  • The Union Club bottle driveway is selling brandy in an economy flagon (3 bottles) for $6.90.
  • Artists Edward Smith, Molly Johnson and Errol Fielder were among those attending the opening of the Greta Collins Gallery, located in St George’s Court, Gurwood Street.
  • Council’s Industrial Promotions Officer, Mr Joe MacManamon said that whilst none had committed there were currently 17 companies interested in decentralising to Wagga.
  • Huthwaites are selling Surf or Persil washing powder, 20oz for 37 cents, Streets Ice Cream, half gallon for 69 cents and Arnott’s Potato Chips 6½ oz box for 29 cents.
