25 Years Ago

  • Wagga Hotel, The Red Lion, closed unexpectedly pending a transfer of its liquor licence but reopened three days later under new ownership.
  • Wagga City Councillors rejected a recommended 25% increase in Councillor fees 7 to 6 votes leaving annual fees at $8000.
  • Compere, Pam Petherbridge, announced that selected Golden Gown entries this year would be shown at the International Cultural Fashion Show later this year in China and Singapore.
  • Wagga publican, Peter Bolton, said that undue responsibility for street disturbances was being “placed at the door of hoteliers”.
  • Pauline Dinnell, Marj Robinson and Hilary Cohen are pictured in the Daily Advertiser, attending the 74th annual conference of the CWA at Newcastle.
  • Kevin Bohm and Associates are advertising house and land packages at Estella for $110,720.
  • More than 200 teachers fighting for a pay rise, endorsed strike action at a meeting held at the Wagga Leagues Club.
  • The Sunicrust team won the Wagga Touch Association’s division one women’s premiership.

50 Years Ago

  • Horrie Weymouth has been appointed manager of Waratah Industries, Wagga’s workshop for handicapped people opening this week.
  • Retiring president, Ian Duff handed over to incoming president, Peter McCoullough at the Wagga Rotaract change-over dinner.
  • Bill Williams, School of tennis, is commencing coaching classes at St. Patricks tennis courts on the corner of Fox and Edward Streets.
  • The Wagga City Library has been renamed the Ethel Geoghegan Library in honour of Ald. Ethel Geoghegan and recognising her services to Wagga and to the library.
  • Police have received complaints of fireworks being ignited in public places during the current 14-day legal sale period for fireworks.
  • Former Labor candidate for Wagga, Mr Jack Skeers, has recommended removal of the Wagga tip from its present site as a possible solution to Wagga’s starling menace.
  • The Riverina College of Advanced Education received more than 200 applications for 11 academic positions.
  • A representative gathering of citizens at a public meeting agreed that the city should host a German style “beer” festival later this year despite opposition from the Australian Temperance Society.

  • Magpie’s coach, Doug Ellwood is expected to be sidelined for four weeks while he recovers from a hamstring injury.
  • Sturt Public School, located next to the Kooringal Post Office, is expected to be operating for the 1973 school year.
  • Wagga Saleyards Selling Agents held their first sale of pigs by weight.
