25 Years Ago

  • Eleven full-time public service jobs are in doubt following an announcement that Wagga’s regional Australian tax office is to close.
  • Air Vice Marshall David Rogers received the salute of 1800 air cadets in a spectacular parade along Wagga’s main street to celebrate the 75th RAAF Anniversary.
  • Wagga gained 9291 new residents between June 1991 and June 1995, a jump of 19.35% which Wagga City Council strategic planner, Kirralie Houghton said underlined the cities “steady” but not “booming” growth.
  • Rob “Greenfingers” Gannon is the man most responsible for yet another prize for the Wagga Railway Stations picturesque gardens which has again been named the South region winner of State Rail’s station garden competition.
  • Former well-known Wagga Christian Brother, Joseph (Felix) O’Connor has died in Sydney aged 84.
  • Presentation Sister, Arline Concannon (Stanislaus) a former teacher at Mount Erin High School has died.
  • The Australian Free Flight Society Championships were held at Collingullie.
  • University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Cliff Blake and chairman of the Riverina Trust of the CSU Foundation, Dr Henry Gardiner were among speakers at the fourth Riverina Foundation Scholarship presentation ceremony at Charles Sturt University.
  • Wagga City Councillor, Michael Georgiou says he has been threatened by fellow Councillor, Jim Eldridge but he can’t understand why.
  • At the Mount Austin Cricket Club presentation night, Steven Wishart, Mal Noack, Ralph Brewer, Ben Hewitt and Mark Scuttie were acknowledged as the club’s best bowlers.
  • New South Wales Transport Minister, Brian Langton has blocked a bid by Eastern Airlines to join Kendell and Hazelton Airlines as a third airline service on the Wagga to Sydney route.
  • Berrigan’s Sports Power opposite Coles has 20% to 50% off all football boots.
  • The Cartwright family held a family reunion at the North Wagga Hall.
  • Doug Conkey is pictured in the Daily Advertiser playing in the Easter Classic Golf Tournament at the Wagga Country Club.

50 Years Ago

  • The Oberburgermeister, Dr H Kessler and other dignitaries from Wagga’s sister city, Nordlingen, are visiting Wagga.
  • Coinciding with the visit a large crowd attended the marriage of a former Nordlingen couple, Uta Hirsch and Hannes Lippmann at St Andrews Presbyterian Church.
  • Wagga boat driver, Jack Marshall unofficially broke the Australian outboard speed record with a top speed of 107.3 m.p.h. during the Australian Powerboat Championships being held at Lake Albert.
  • There were 400 visitors to the Wagga and District Historical Society Museum over the Easter weekend and the society is considering extending opening times to include Monday and Thursday afternoons.
  • Wagga City Council announced it will object strongly to any move by the Housing Commission to purchase 56 acres of home sites in a choice section of Kooringal.
  • More than 100 guests helped Miss Nada Panic celebrate her 21st birthday at the RSL Club recently.
  • Wagga’s population has increased by 750 in the 12 months to 30 June 1970 to reach a total of 28,330.
  • Reverend Father W J Gilby celebrated his 40th anniversary as a priest and assisted in a con-celebrated Mass at Our Lady of Fatima Church, South Wagga with priests who trained with him at St Patricks College, Manly.
  • $800 in banknotes has been discovered in an old piece of furniture at the Wagga Tip and Wagga police will “carefully consider” any claims made for it.
  • Ashmont Self Service Food Mart is selling 16oz Kelloggs Corn Flakes for 35 cents, Edgell Soups 16oz for 14 cents and Eta Margarine 1lb for 33 cents all with free delivery.
  • Television, Recording and Night Club Star, Frankie Davidson is featured at the Leagues Club this Saturday Night.
  • South Wagga Apex Club are organising a rally style bikeathon from Wagga to the Kurrajong Reserve to raise funds for The Haven, the Loretto Home of Compassion, and the Boy Scouts Association.
  • Bill Abigail has retired after 46 years with the PMG, most of it spent in the telegraphy section at Wagga Post Office.
  • Minister for Agriculture, Mr G R Crawford presented an award to the Dux of Wagga Agricultural College, Mr S E Dunn watched by College Principal, Mr B F Atkins.
  • “Ryan’s Daughter”, filmed in 70mm, is showing twice daily at Hoyts theatre.
