25 Years Ago

• Greater Murray Health Service chairwoman, Joy Ross believes the health system in rural NSW will improve under radical new changes announced by the Minister for Health, Dr Andrew Refshauge.

• Commandant of the Wagga Voluntary Aid Detachment, Mavis Duff is asking for more volunteers to assist in this weeks annual Red Cross doorknock appeal.

• Wagga CWA celebrated Vera Kelaher’s 67 years of CWA membership.

• Rural construction engineer, John Skipper retired from Wagga City Council after 42 years in local government.

• Wagga dentist, Peter Crozier has given up his Kooringal practice and is going into semi-retirement as a travelling locum dentist.

• Mayor, Peter Dale officially opened the Riverina regional office of the Royal Life Saving Society at the Wagga Pool which has been named after the late Jeff Aitken.

• Tolland Tenant Group secretary, Frances Lloyd, and chairwoman, Rosey Wallis say that a pedestrian crossing is desperately needed outside Turvey Tops shopping centre.

• The Marian award presented to the best allrounder at St Michaels cricket club was presented to Gerald Pieper at the club’s presentation night at the Sportsmen’s Hotel.

• Wollundry Rotary Club president, Michael Knight, congratulated first year, CSU student, Kym Baker who was awarded a $6000 Rotary scholarship.

• Hilda and Ron Bragg have relocated their rural supplies business, R A Bragg which they first established in 1962 to Hammond Avenue.

• Mitchell Rose, 15, was awarded the Rotary Young Achiever in Service Award at the “It’s all about kids” Rotary Expo.

• Wagga’s Booranga Writers Centre is hosting visiting American poets Carol and Richard Frost.


50 Years Ago

• Harold Fife easily won a Wagga City Council by-election to fill the vacant seat caused by the recent death of his father, Alderman Clyde Fife.

• Wagga Apex held its annual Lake Albert Carnival featuring swimming races, a raft race, model aircraft display and a fishing competition.

• Ida Buckley played Madame Cot and Ian Jones played Monsieur Boniface in the Wagga School of Arts production of the French Farce “Hotel Paradiso” produced by Peter O’Shaughnessy at the Civic Theatre.

• Commercial Bank of Australia staff members including, Norman Forrest, Peter Latham and Ron van Ray attended shooting practice assisted by members of the Wagga Pistol Club.

• Wagga Agricultural College was to start its first co-educational academic year on March 31 but has not yet received any female student enrolments.

• Woolworths are advertising topside or round steak for 65 cents lb, No. 7 chickens for 99 cents each and freshly dug potatoes 5lb for 20 cents.

• Mr K Foley, acting for a 20-year-old charged with a series of drug thefts from businesses said that his client’s parents did not want him to apply for bail.

• The Mayor, Ald Gissing, inspected troops from the Kapooka Army Camp during a Beating of the Retreat ceremony held opposite the Council Chambers.

• Second Wagga Scout Group secretary Allan Crittle said that a bottle drive this weekend would raise funds for much needed improvements at the Scout Hall in Bolton Street.

• Captains and vice-captains at South Wagga Public School were presented with their badges by P&C president, Mr Sel Rawlings with principal, Mr E Doyle and vice-principal, Mr L Bittar watching on.

• At a hearing in the Wagga District Licensing Court, Mr T A Ratcliff approved an increase in membership of the Wagga Leagues Club from 6,250 to 12,000.

• Eric Barter, the new host at the Zebra Colonial Room Restaurant invites guests to dine on Friday and Saturday nights with music provided by the Coachmen and guest vocalist, “Jenny”.

• CWA Riverina Group president, Mrs H Pitson presented long service bars to Mrs W Bryson, Mrs L Lucas, Mrs E Williams, Mrs R Scott, Mrs O B Murray, Mrs T Bennett, Mrs L Chamberlain, Mrs A Bourne, and Mrs H Leak.

• Mr R McRae was re-elected as president of the Wagga High School P & C Association with Messrs Blackall, Warren, Wall, and Templeton elected as vice-presidents.

• Mrs Annie McAnulty won $250 worth of goods in the RVN-2 “TV Bonanza” at Edmondsons.
