25 Years Ago

  • Rebecca Skeers from Trinity Senior High School and Alison Green from Kooringal High School had the highest Riverina results for last year’s Higher School Certificate exams.
  • Mrs Catherine Lodge (nee Chauncey) bequeathed about $275,000 to the Caloola Nursing Home in memory of her late brother Maurice and late sister, Annie who died six months apart during World War I.
  • Russell Willis aged 61 who has been a regular blood donor since he was 18 was presented with a certificate marking his 150th donation of blood.
  • The ninth annual Riverina Summer School for Strings is being held at the Charles Sturt University convention centre.
  • Wagga swimmers, Elizabeth McDonald, Ashley Tucker, Chemain Perceval, Kelly King, Scott Lanarus, Andrew Pratley, and Kirsten Harmer are attending the NSW Country Titles and the NSW State Age Titles this week.
  • Tarcoola Turf Farm owner, Ken Tyson said that they are delivering ten truckloads of Kikuyu turf for the new Caulfield racetrack to be unveiled in March.
  • Melanie Sleeman who has just completed her Higher School Certificate at Kooringal High School will spend the next 12 months as a Rotary exchange student in Argentina, sponsored by Wagga’s Sunrise Rotary Club.
  • Jim and Neita Brill are celebrating their 60th (Diamond) wedding anniversary.
  • Wagga teacher, Greg Smith has returned from a 12-month teaching exchange program in Japan.
  •  Commonwealth Employment Service (CES) branch manager, Garry Northey said that Wagga employers can now take advantage of the best recruitment incentives ever offered.
  • Wagga’s first council road safety officer, Vicki Case, is working with authorities to lower the road toll and make the city safer for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • John Retallick won the A grade stableford round last week at the Wagga Country Club, with a fine 41 points, narrowly defeating vice-captain Doug Fisher.
  • The Lake Albert Fire Brigade has completed a Christmas raffle to help pay for the upgrade and maintenance of its firefighting equipment.
  • A teenage house party in suburban Wagga ended in violence with one youth in hospital and another in police custody.

50 Years Ago

  • Chief instructor, Ron Tickle, led a team of instructors at learn to swim classes for 130 young children at the Wagga Baths, sponsored by Wagga City Council in conjunction with the Wagga Swimming Club.
  • More than 1,300,000 sheep were sold at Wagga Saleyards in 1970 reinforcing its claim as the biggest stock selling centre outside Sydney and Melbourne.
  • Dr C D Blake, Senior Lecturer in Plant Pathology at the University of Sydney has been appointed as inaugural Principal of the Riverina College of Advanced Education.
  • Ald W C (Clyde) Fife the longest serving member of Wagga City Council and father of Member for Wagga, Wal Fife, died at his Wagga home.
  • Magistrate, Mr P F Smith sentenced an 18-year-old former Wagga Teachers College student to six months gaol on a charge of selling Indian hemp at the college.
  • Dental surgeon, John McCoy, has returned to Wagga to reopen his practice after twelve years in London.
  • Mayor, Morris Gissing presented Rotary Exchange student, Wayne Lewis, with a letter of introduction and plaque of Wagga’s coat of arms to be presented to the Mayor of Clavis, New Mexico where he will be studying for the next 12 months.
  • Head Chef, Bill Taylor and assistant chef, Alby McCurdy helped to prepare one quarter of a ton of prawns which were consumed at the Wagga Leagues Club “prawn night”.
  • Det. Sgt. L. Lundie said that drugs were believed to be the target in three different robbery attempts at doctors’ surgeries and a Wagga Pharmacy over the weekend.
  • Wagga Mayor, Morris Gissing hosted a mayoral welcome for 36 Americans who are spending three days in Wagga at the end of year-long field scholarships in Australia.
  • Wagga and District Bowling Association defeated the Albury and District Association, by the narrow margin of 120 to 119, in their annual match for the W J Blake Cup.
  • School uniform blazers are selling at Huthwaites for $13.25 in sizes 30 to 40.
  • Fifty guests attended the 21st birthday party for Miss Jill Marsden held at the home of her parents, Mr and Mrs W Marsden in Grove Street.
  • Inspector R A B Allen has been appointed as acting Superintendent of the Riverina Police District.
